If the tech becomes attractice enough (high visibility in direct sunlight, lower power consumption, etc), maybe we'll see more public advertisers switch to them for digital signage, significantly increasing the demand and volume.

One can dream..

The transit stop use case really does seem to be ramping up, including the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority currently adding them to most surface Green Line stops: https://www.mbta.com/projects/solar-powered-e-ink-signs

Transit was one of the two core practical applications the Visionect founder mentioned in Nov 2020: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25067359

Why only one bedroom apartments? You can't build a community that you think will stand for any amount of time and be this hostile to families.
rory096 · 4 years ago
The site only lists rents for studios/one-beds, but the application plan approved by the Tempe City Council includes a number of 2br apartments and a handful of 3br. The mix is as follows:

41 du/ac / 636 units

- 456 one bedroom

- 134 two bedroom

- 8 three bedroom

- 38 live-work one bedroom

Disappointingly, it shows some 152 vehicle parking spots on-site — it seems the exemption they got only applies to the residential parking requirements, and the commercial spaces are still fully parked.

The reduction to three stories (from five) also seems like a shame — the added shade and density from taller buildings would likely have made it a more livable site.

"Washington State Department of Agriculture workers, illuminated by red lamps, vacuum a nest of Asian giant hornets from a tree in Blaine"

Interesting. Why do they use red lamps?

rory096 · 5 years ago
Red light is typically used at night in order to avoid destroying the eye's rhodopsin, which helps with night vision and takes at least 30 minutes of non-exposure to blue light to fully replenish. You'll see pilots and astronomers using red flashlights for this reason.

Everyone that plans on moving somewhere should do 1 of 2 things:

1. Not move there because of flight training schools.

2. Lobby to get the flight training school to practice over unpopulated areas.

>2. Lobby to get the flight training school to practice over unpopulated areas.

This is fairly typical — even in urban centers there's typically one or more "training areas" for students to practice maneuvers. e.g. in New York: https://i.imgur.com/Djum5pX.png

The recent mobile Firefox is worse in every way that matters to me:

° Breaking recent add-ons (for the few add-ons that exist). I added a close-tab icon to compensate for the bad tab-ui. It's gone now.
° URL-bar hiding is wonkey. Some overlays disable hiding due to recent phising attacks. Now, for overlays, it is always present and hides the bottom of the page. This is very annoying when links are hidden behind the bar.
° URL bar (2): where have my bookmarks gone?
° URL bar (3): no more editing the URL if anything was *ever* searched in the current tab. Instead it edits the search. The URL is inaccessible.
° After 'Open in new tab' there is an annoying delay for 'Switch' again hiding links.
° Tab selection is just bad now. Preview is broken. If anything is displayed, it is often the image of two sites ago, even if the page has rendered.
° Tab selection (2) no more moving the tabs?
° Tab selection (3) why waste so much space? Using only 80% of the screen. And every tab wastes two lines and a half of useful space. Why is only the domain shown? Why not truncated or cut in the middle?
° Tab selection (4): newly opened tabs are hidden, you always have to scroll up as the current tab is always first, older tabs are lower.
° about:config is broken. Certificate error. Certificate error is broken too. Thus no disabling reader mode.
These are papercuts, every day, every time I use Firefox. /rant

On the other hand, Chrome for Android killing off Duet a few weeks ago has made it actively painful every time I need to switch tabs.

Sounds like it's still above 0, which means you should be forced to source local talent before you're permitted to source from outside the country.

It's so strange to me that this viewport is controversial, but "Buy Local" (which I have yet to encounter someone who is against supporting local businesses) is not. This is the labor version of "Buy Local".

>Sounds like it's still above 0

Because of frictional unemployment, it's neither possible nor desirable for the unemployment rate to reach 0.

>which means you should be forced to source local talent before you're permitted to source from outside the country.

This is already a requirement; H-1B employers must attest that they can't find an employee domestically and have made a good faith attempt to do so.

>It's so strange to me that this viewport is controversial, but "Buy Local" (which I have yet to encounter someone who is against supporting local businesses) is not. This is the labor version of "Buy Local".

Buy Local is not enforced by the jackboot of the federal government. You're free to hire only non-visa workers for your business.

Curious, does anyone know if the US govt is filling the reserve now, or even adding capacity? With oil so incredibly cheap right now, now is the absolute best time to be building and expanding our reserves.
rory096 · 6 years ago
Note that the reserve is currently at 87.4% capacity, with 635 million barrels in inventory (250.3m sweet, 384.7m sour).[0]

Plans to expand capacity to a billion barrels with the addition of a new site in Richton, MS were cancelled in 2010.[1]

I feel like a question like this is better served doing a Google search and finding results from reputable sources...rather than asking a question on HN.

Having said that, Coronavirus is consider a repository illness...so you'd probably perform the same home treatment as any other respiratory illness.

>you'd probably perform the same home treatment as any other respiratory illness.

Notably, you should not take ibuprofen or other NSAIDS. Stick to acetaminophen/paracetamol instead.
