Too bad politicians today don't read the history books they want to burn, they might save their own skins.

Pretty sure donors line their pockets a lot more than the voting poor.

I've been using Sonophone on iOS since all this kicked off. Not great, but it works. (For me Sonos breaking NAS media server support was killer, and Sonophone can handle it).

Had this not happened sledgehammers would have been going through speakers.

I would still prefer they rolled back to the old app, or made it as an optional re-release.

I’ve been using SonoPhone and SonoPad.

It now works instantly. Even my customsd sources work, and they work better than the previous app too.

Only thing is I had to go to the desktop app to get the customsd sources working on a new network.

I haven’t used the official App in months now.

I love the idea. My music is now 50% cloud only, 50% on disk. I mean, its 100% in the cloud, i just have local files for half available. Ive been thinking about self hosting some music provider thingy (or even just supporting ssh via my dyndns-like capability) to my NAS and bringing music back to self owned files. However, it is work to do when the internet is pretty reliable, costs are low, etc.

Those who love this conceptually but have/had cloud music, did you act? How/why?

I have a airsonic (fork of subsonic, which I used for a long time) server running on a vps. I’ve probably had this for coming on 20 years now.

It works phenomenally.

At some point I was going to mirror it locally, but never got around to it.

It is all backed up in dropbox

They’re certainly scammy and overpriced, but probably still a better deal than owning a full vacation home that sits empty most of the year….
reverend_gonzo · a year ago
Not quite. You can sell the vacation home, you can (usually) rent it out.

It’s your property; within zoning restrictions, you can do whatever you want with it.

Not true with a timeshare.

You think it takes 5+ years to acquire those skills?! Man, I would be driven insane in an environment like that. Such a long time and a relatively low bar.
reverend_gonzo · 2 years ago
I know people with 20y that can’t do that.

As a taxpayer who funds public schools, I find it acceptable to subsidize the food of those who are struggling, but I do not have any desire to subsidize the ruling elite (who, in many cases, intentionally keep working class pay low). They can pay for their own children's food.
reverend_gonzo · 2 years ago
The ruling elite don’t go to public school. They already pay for their children’s food.

I got sucked into a finance rabbit hole and I have been reading about some "tricks" in market making and I don't see why these are problematic? Even if it is a problem, how would you even prove it? Is it wrong to place an ask order at much lower price, then backing off if it doesn't work out? Should I just put my limit order and let it stay there?

It’s all about intent. If you place a bonafide order with the intent of it getting, but at a later time (1ms is fine) decide that is no longer a good price, you are cancel it.

However, if you place an order that you do not intend to get filled to make the market think there is demand when there actually isn’t, that is illegal.

So, how do they prove this? Well, proving intent is hard, unless you’re dumb enough to send emails saying, for example, you want a smart order type that won’t get filled.

reverend_gonzo commented on SVB collapse could mean a $500B venture capital ‘haircut’   bloomberg.com/news/articl... · Posted by u/askl56

Oh, I'm not looking to absolve SVB of their responsibility for their position. I think you misread my comment. I mean blaming the Fed for the yield curve inversion and the steep change in long-term rates, and thus value of long-term debt, as opposed to only low overnight interest rates. The Fed does not deserve blame for SVB's choice to load up on that long-term debt without hedging those risks. I'm answering the parent's context, which is discussing how the gun got loaded; we all agree it was SVB to blame for pointing it at their own head.
reverend_gonzo · 2 years ago
I’d say it’s more like the Fed opened up a “Free ammo and cocaine store”. Most banks came by, got their free coke and went on their way. SVB came alone and said “well let’s have a fucking party: get rocked up and play some Russian roulette.” And every other bank that might’ve been eyeing that ammo realized “holy shit this is for reals.”

I am a host and an often traveler.

AirBnb doesn’t necessarily side with one side or the other, but rather, there, customer service is outsourced to the Philippines and they just don’t care. The side you wins is the side you can say the magic words that specific agent wants to hear.

I’ve had guests stay at our place and get a refund at the end by lying, and even admitted to me, he knows how Airbnb support works so knew what to say to them.

I’ve been able to get damage claims paid by Airbnb when guests refused.

Looking at this host though and reading the reviews, this looks like a complete scam. Claire, for one, is definitely not real. Also anything under 4.7 on Airbnb is generally not good. I generally only rent 4.8 and up. The first review (I hough it may not have been up when he booked) mentions being hit up for money, bad checking, etc, lol of which point to a scam.

Had it been me, I wouldn’t have cancelled and would have just said I’ll stay there and been done with it.

Why would you need someone with decades of experience to hire an intern or a new grad?

It's customary for a lot of companies to have an interviewer which is above or _at_ the level that you are recruiting. Therefore someone with a year or two of experience is perfectly able to hire an intern or someone that will be hired at the same level as them.

Looking at Amazon for example, "Hire and Develop the Best" is one of the leadership principles, and you CANNOT be promoted if you don't conduct interviews.

reverend_gonzo · 3 years ago
Inexperienced engineers simply don’t have the experience to make good hiring decisions. Having them being involved in the process is fine, but they should be shadowing someone more senior.
