I tried it for the first time the other day after having heard how much better it's gotten recently, and it made me really wonder how bad was the UX _before_ all these recent improvements. I don't want to bash on it too hard, because it's clear that a ton of hard work has gone into it, but it was really a struggle for me to get some pretty basic things done. The only feedback for a lot of things I tried to do was some not-very helpful error messages in the console, or just the whole program crashing. After trying hard for quite a few hours, reading lots of docs and watching tutorials, I ended up giving up and going back to Fusion 360.

It's an acquired taste. The sketcher is actually pretty good these days and way snappier than Fusion 360 on my machine.

It is far but you can take the metro to the bus, that's how I've visited. And it is a really cool museum, I would recommend it to anyone. Try to go before the shuttle is gone I guess, but they also have an SR-71, lots of satellites, a Concorde, and a thousand other planes. Just a giant hangar full of cool stuff.

That is a long trip from downtown; but utterly worth it.

Any hacks to fix the useless light?

There are some diffuser mods available too that look like they would make a big difference.

My dentist was bought out by one of these operations a couple of years ago, and quit after a few months of observing their tactics. I never actually saw her when I went for two 6 months checkups. It was non-stop upsell on water piks, "preventative" procedures, cosmetics. So I switched back when I found out my original dentist had re-opened a private practice. Stay away from venture capital dentistry operations. Same with veterinary practices -- similar issue with venture capital takeover of our long term vet.

If the operation is owned/financed by venture capital, stay away. Their priority is obviously not health and wellbeing.

The option these days for Vets is sell to PE, shut down, or try to find a younger DVM who wants to take over the practice and work in for a couple of years. But the younger DVMs have debt to pay and need to take the PE job. There's little love for the PE route but it gives an exit to older vets I suppose. I doubt many like watching their life's work being hollowed out and worn as a skin suit.

There is also:

* StealthChanger: https://github.com/DraftShift/StealthChanger

* TapChanger: https://github.com/viesturz/tapchanger

Looking forward to when I can just buy an LDO kit of one of these :D I'm not a fan of mmu/ercf.

Would love to see an open source AMS in the meantime. Just something where i can store multiple rolls of filament and autofeed a single roll before the print. For convenience.

It's worth noting that both TapChanger and StealthChanger both require a flying gantry and won't work on a Trident style machine (and thus aren't suitable to a lot of CoreXY type machines).

Thanks, that is helpful. It looks like for some of the larger ones the editors left comments that dataset was imported from USGS quads which makes sense, while other smaller ones don't list any source information - possibly mapped personally by hiking with a GPS?
racnid · 2 years ago
I know I personally mapped one with a GPS and canoe.

Stewart Brand also wrote a book and made a docuseries about bottom-up architecture called "How Buildings Learn": https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrg__Ji1S58TnecKCIFNskj-Q...

A lot of it is inspired by the ideas of Christopher Alexander, who also inspired the notion of design patterns in software... it is an interesting rabbit hole to dive into.

Really great book I bought years ago from a recommendation on HN; of course.

A solar water heater would be a hell of a lot more efficient than generating electricity via solar then trying to heat water with that!
racnid · 2 years ago
Yes but. It turns out that PV solar wins on maintenance by a lot; since you don't have to run hot water pipes and keep the solar heater from leaking. With a reasonable system design you can pretty much just connect the wires to your heater element.

That's because you are buying into western propaganda. These countries operate on some kind of "hype" of law. The odds that you'll go to jail in Singapore for committing a "punishable" offense is really low. I was surprised how lax Singapore is given its reputation. It seems that they are holding the status quo by that reputation rather than the enforcement of it.

This is the same for many other countries but not the case for the US. Also your first two examples applies to really small list of countries (Iran and S.A.) and their current governments are the disgrace of the world and are not really an example to take (like going too extreme and something the US shouldn't "I guess" be compared too).

This is just whataboutism combined with wanton disregard for tool safety/human life

It's identical in design to any number for Makita, Dewalt, or other nicer brands (1k$ from Festool). The point was that it's not a 15K$ tool. It's a 200$ tool for a Dewalt. SMH my head. Yes of course you could buy a bench mount industrial one or something for lots of money.
