But is it real empathy? Did they actually pause and feel bad and convert their emotional response to some written message?

Or did they just short circuit. "Dead relative -> Say sorry for your loss". Like an AI bot.

It's the second one.

One of my younger brothers died a few weeks ago (he was 67; I'm 75). When people offer sympathy, I accept it and don't question their motives or involvement.

I love this quote (from Interlisp-D: Overview and Status):

"Interlisp is a very large software system and large software systems are not easy to construct. Interlisp-D has on the order of 17,000 lines of Lisp code, 6,000 lines of Bcpl, and 4,000 lines of microcode."

So large. :)

An X-ray machine was in the shoe store when I was little, but my father told us not to let it be used on us.

Or they should do what the chinese government does and subsize the hell out of the economy, rather than the military.

China seems to spend a lot on its military as well as its industry.

Most of the DC fast chargers I use have big generators hidden behind bushes.

And yet I can list a lot of things that Bell Labs did that changed the World, and yet I am struggling to name even one that came out of IBM Research. I'm not saying it didn't happen, I'm saying that work didn't resonate as strongly.

Intel makes the quark which is like a 486dx that runs on a watch battery. There are a few models now, but I think that qualifies?
pmcjones · 4 months ago
The Quark was discontinued in 2019.
