pldr1234 commented on Anthony Levandowski Pardoned   trumpwhitehouse.archives.... · Posted by u/aresant

Most of these are people accused of various drug crimes (many nonviolent).

As much as I hate Trump, I support that.

The worst one was this:

Paul Erickson – President Trump has issued a full pardon to Paul Erikson. This pardon is supported by Kellyanne Conway. Mr. Erickson’s conviction was based off the Russian collusion hoax. After finding no grounds to charge him with any crimes with respect to connections with Russia, he was charged with a minor financial crime. Although the Department of Justice sought a lesser sentence, Mr. Erickson was sentenced to 7 years’ imprisonment—nearly double the Department of Justice’s recommended maximum sentence. This pardon helps right the wrongs of what has been revealed to be perhaps the greatest witch hunt in American History.

Yeah, BS. Trump deserved to lose his Presidency then and there.

I also didn't like the special treatment that Stephen Bannon received. There is another person who deserves to rot in hell.

But my guess is that more than 2/3 of these commutations I support. And it has nothing to do with who commuted them.

Just to note - they specifically added those other commutations to elicit your exact reaction:

"Some look shady, but it's mostly good".

You'd have to research what planes look like departing and landing.

But without that.. I would have thought (as a layman) - is the plane doing anything to add vs cut drag? That could be a clue...

(from a toy perspective of how planes work in movies ofc).

pldr1234 commented on Political Detox Week – No politics on HN for one week (2016)   news.ycombinator.com/item... · Posted by u/notional

I started this concept ten years ago. Dropped Facebook, no more economist subscription, no papers, never had TV. That doesn't mean holding a hard line and hiding your head in a pillow. There is enough overflow from HN, the radio, friends, occasional newspapers. It seems I have a much healthier laid back attitude to work, friends, family. I see them all uptight about some event. Following news story breathlessly, fuming or arguing. Meanwhile, I'm trying to calm every one down, don't worry about it, it doesn't matter. Political parties change, administration doesn't. Think about long term goals, and affects you can have on that. Skip the day to day arguments. There is so, much valuable news and information on HN, and so much valuable discussion, often from experts in their field. (More rare lately?) You can gather your data, and solve most of your issues, from links provided in HN. So many interesting intellectual topics to pursue. For example: Need covid numbers? Look at worldometers.com Keep it up Dang.

Unfortunately the incredible bleed-through right now each day on politics in HN means I'll likely have to detox from HN itself.

It's saddening, but maybe for the best too.

I'm 29 and have a question for those older than me. Until about 10 years ago, I dont remember ever hearing anyone arguing that we should limit free speech. I remember being told that the only limit was that you couldnt tell "fire" in a movie theater unless there really was a fire. This was a common refrain. I remember people talking about how free speech was what made America different. Everyone on both sides of the political aisle was proud of the first amendment.

However, I was pretty young and my memory may be wrong. Has the discourse always been this way, or has it changed significantly in the past 10 years? If it changed, when did this start? After 9/11? After Trump?

The current discourse is crazy to me. We have to remember that free speech is literally the FIRST amendment. Our founding fathers thought that basically nothing was more important than this. So we should err on the side of caution. It's east to restrict freedom and almost impossible to win it back. Although if you want to go a little bit further, they also would have had, as individuals, a higher tolerance for violence in the event that people wanted to "petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Anyway, just curious to hear other people's opinions on when the importance of free speech started to diminish in our collective mind.

This is a post where the parent has already taken a very strong position/view, and is thinly veiling it in the form of a question (and not veiled very well either).

Is there a way to report these types of posts? Or better yet, to have HN remove all this incessant political commentary.

Perhaps I'll take the time to finally work on that custom Chrome extension project I've been meaning to tackle..

It's not censorship, it's free market. These are private companies.
pldr1234 · 5 years ago
Exactly this. If I start a private enterprise, I'll be damned if somebody dictates that they have a private right to do or say some particular thing on services I pay hosting for.

Corporations are not beholden to pleasing every single individual.
