pawelk commented on When do we stop finding new music?   statsignificant.com/p/whe... · Posted by u/commons-tragedy

I find it interesting that GenZ and Millennials show a much smaller preference for their own decade's music. https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_pr...

The 1980s are still doing quite well among all but the oldest generation.

Is it possible that music may actually be getting worse? Corporatized, consolidated, computerized.

Look at Hollywood now too: everything is a sequel, prequel, remake, reboot, or adaptation. There’s hardly anything original anymore.

pawelk · 2 years ago
I think it's the opposite of corporatization and consolidation. Computerization? Yes, of course, but it gave everyone the possibility to make music at a very affordable cost. A $100 MIDI controller comes with a license for a full blown music production software and literally anyone can record, mix, master and release an album. I know several people who are not professional musicians, not even formally trained - just happen to like making sounds - who have their albums on Spotify and/or Soundcloud.

No, the number for gasoline is missing one zero; with the correct number, gasoline is still 6-8 times more energy dense per kg.
pawelk · 3 years ago
Thanks. I should have fact-checked the number before doing the math :)

> battery with 500 Wh/kg

Wow, that's amazing, creeping up towards the energy density of gasoline at around 1200 Wh/kg

Of course you don't have to lug around the spent gasoline after you've used it, but that's really the problem too innit?

pawelk · 3 years ago
Isn't it break even point, considering >60% of the gasoline energy is dissipated as heat, and <40% to make the wheels spin?

Why not just ban parking them in underground garages instead? Some LPG powered cars do have such a restriction in some EU states. Gas powered vehicles catch fire and burn as well. I've seen countless burning cars during the last heatwave.
pawelk · 3 years ago
The reason to ban LPG cars from underground garages is that propane is heavier than air, and in case of a leak the gas has nowhere to go (other than drainage, which sort of highlights the problem).

We used to have those in the Netherlands before there was any attention paid to energy savings (~15 years ago). Freezers also used to be just open without any coverings. Budget supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi were the first to introduce both sliding glass doors on the freezers and doors on the standing fridges.
pawelk · 3 years ago
Interesting. Lidl and Aldi in Poland (at least the ones nearby) have doorless fridges.

I respect your opinion but honestly fragmentation sucks. I wish there was even more consolidation - ever use a power drill? 7 different battery types non compatible with each other.

On a related note I’m happy usb seems to be the general connector winner (though it’s certainly not without fault).

What would the average consumer gain if there were say, 10 different browser engines equally popular?

Chromium is open source and you can easily disable features you disagree with. Don’t see the downside. Fork it and add functionality you’d like, like Brave.

> ever use a power drill? 7 different battery types non compatible with each other.

Battery is the proprietary part. The engine (battery + motor) makes it spin, but for the purpose of making a hole or driving a screw one can use a wide array of standardized bits from various manufacturers. You may need an SDS adapter (one way or the other) and that's it. Same bits will even work with a hand cranked drill press built 100 years ago.

I have recently wondered if it would work to have a fully visual standup comedian. Would be a challenge for sure
pawelk · 3 years ago
There's a purely visual Polish comedy artist Ireneusz Krosny, see e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYwuvil6cp0 Not sure if the gags could be considered stand-up in a strict sense, but he can capture and entertain the audience using just body language and very little, if any, props.

I think it's hilarious that it decided, based on the AI algorithm, that I lied about my age!
pawelk · 3 years ago
Same here. I selected my real age and the algorithm thinks I'm 7 years younger than that (well, thanks I guess, but it is not me who's not telling the truth).

Having had one of these, I just want to say: “Never again.” Mine would turn itself on when you washed it and turn itself off when something splattered (like 50% of the time when I boiled water).

It made me wonder if anyone actually tested the damn design before approval for mass production.

pawelk · 4 years ago
My oven has touch controls on the front that are rendered useless as soon as I open it and heat/vapor is released onto the front panel. Luckily the touch interface is only for secondary features like setting timers, the important ones - temperature and mode selection - are physical knobs that can be pushed in flush with the front.

From my limited experience with touch operated stoves - these would be just as reliably operated by randomly throwing darts at a board.

HDPE is used in both plastic bottles and freshwater plumbing (under the name PEX).
pawelk · 4 years ago
From the Wikipedia page on PEX (Cross-linked polyethylene)

> It is also used for natural gas and _offshore oil applications_, chemical transportation, and transportation of sewage and slurries.

So yeah, a bacteria capable of dissolving that shouldn't be released anywhere near an offshore oil pipeline.
