I don't understand who keeps falling for this stuff. The victims are not all 90 year old grannies suffering from cognitive decline.

Large of law numbers. There are a lot of idiots out there. I had a buddy; super nice, super funny guy, late 20's, but financially an idiot.

He sent a $1,000 check as "collateral" to some online "bank" to get a $10,000 "loan". I explained to him that this isn't how any of this works and he just paused and said, "Huh, so should put a stop payment on the second check?" He had sent them another $1,000 as some sort of second round of collateral for the loan or some other nonsense.

And I've known dumber people than him.

I'm very surprised at these claims of what constitutes the median income.

Yeah, they seem very wrong. Checking a couple: What they say for Washington $153,000 what the US census says $94,952

What they say for Kansas $126,270 what the US census says $72,639

What they say for North Dakota $133,770 what the US census says $75,949

I went here first too, I thought I need to start putting my laptop on the right side of my main screen to make me lean the other way to increase my mood.

Getting iraq not having WMD right probably isn't that hard.

Allegedly canadian intelligence knew this, but had it all marked "for canadian eyes only" because they were worried about consequences if usa found out they weren't on board. I highly doubt canada has super-spies, the problem is usa really wanted there to be WMDs, so they came to the conclusion there was.

Sometimes I feel like I was taking crazy pills, but I distinctly remember major news agencies like the BBC calling BS with pretty hard facts about the whole WMD thing, but no one really cared. (In America or Britain anyways)

1. Any piece that uses Haidt's "Coddling" essay early on as support is questionable because that piece is horseshit

2. I'd be very interested to read something interrogating the Gallup poll quoted early... it seems to have interesting but vague questions like "Are you satisfied with the current size and power of the federal government?" or "Are you satisfied with the influence of organized religion?" ... but since people's different viewpoints would cause conflicting result-based reactions to those questions (if there was zero organized religion I would be VERY satisfied while certainly other people would call that disastrous)... then doesn't the Gallup poll at least partially become not about the direction of the country but how well the powers that be are "selling" the direction of the country?

ovulator · a year ago
To address your second point, it is merely about satisfaction, not solutions or best optimal outcomes. The question is neutral to what the current state is or what the future state should be, only on their satisfaction with it.

There isn't really a conflicting result if 50% of the people think we should live in a theocracy and 50% think religion should be outlawed if 0% of them are satisfied with the status quo.

You can use money to buy time. You can't convert time to money as easily.

I can get money with my time via a job, how exactly do I get time with the money I now have.

In the US, anyway, there's a strong tendency for people to choose the car they drive as a signifier for what sort of subculture (not always political) they identify with.

I'm not expressing agreement with that sort of thing, just saying what I've been noticing over the past couple of years.

ovulator · a year ago
Yeah, when you see a Honda CR-V or Toyota Camry driving down the road you know exactly why those people bought those cars, they are one of THEM.
