We all like to complain about the annoyances and uselessness of the TSA (EDIT: and other post 9/11 security changes) or the cramped seats and extra fees that come with a standard economy ticket, but not enough attention is paid to how much safer and cheaper flying has become over the last few decades.
orbitur · 7 years ago
When did the TSA make flying safer and cheaper?

Not if you have any crypto assets/positions :-)

Tell me about the tangible, useful things (like groceries, vehicles, living spaces) these assets/positions have bought for Bitcoin owners.

And how is Apple's walled app store any better than the alternative of at&t controlled app store?

They can keep their 30% cut if they allow me to sideload apps from external sources.

> And how is Apple's walled app store any better than the alternative of at&t controlled app store?

I don't know if you've used an iPhone, but do you really think AT&T's walled garden would have anything approaching the quality of the best apps on the App Store?

Unfortunately that destroys accessibility. If you want to support accessibility, then you need a more complicated rendering target than something like a canvas.
orbitur · 7 years ago
It will for a bit. The people who build UI frameworks in wasm will either make it a priority or they'll add it later.

It sucks but this is the way we're heading. I'm not sure web devs will even be writing HTML in 5 years beyond adding a canvas tag.

By flying I assume you mean flying in the USA because I don't have any issues with Australia, Asia or Europe.

Can your family give you a hug just as you enter the gate to board your plane? Because that's how it was before 9/11 in the States.

This. Nothing is 100% good or bad. The conversation on both sides has gotten laughably hyperbolic. Like any medical intervention the pros and cons of each vaccine need to be discussed rationally and with full informed consent for each patient. Other commenters posting outrage casting anti-vaxxing as mental derangement or child abuse are going to get as far as the worst kind of anti-vax rhetoric
orbitur · 7 years ago
If measles is more common now that anti-vax is more popular, that's a problem worth addressing. We had a known, working solution, so yeah, it does seem like child abuse.

You could say this about pretty much anything with fines involved.

"It's OK for the rich to park on double yellow lines, litter in the streets, etc.."

orbitur · 7 years ago
Yes. That is one of the correct ways to frame this problem.

I don't think this problem will ever be solved while you can easily find books written by MDs arguing that vaccines are unsafe. Alienating civilians who believe in what these doctors say is probably not the best approach.

> you can easily find books written by MDs arguing that vaccines are unsafe

People aren't reading books with bad info, they're reading Facebook posts and random blogs.

I'm not convinced this 'diversity of thought' (aka direct domain expertise) is actually as useful as people love to claim these days. It's an extremely popular narrative that gets pushed with very little questioning or measuring of its utility.

a) is it really accurate that a smart person can't legitimately learn and be sensitive to life experiences from others or b) why can't they hire people to advise them while still managing the project themselves?

This sounds like a solvable problem by promoting being sympathetic and deferential, rather than replacing people outright from the process simply because they aren't 'from' that group. It's just as likely the people with the life experience don't have the other skills for managing or running a project as well.

Everyone is acting like this project is already a success when it has just launched...Id wait a couple years before calling LeBron a hero.

> a) is it really accurate that a smart person can't legitimately learn and be sensitive to life experiences from others

There's are a lot of subtleties that lived experience can reveal. Even the smartest person might miss some knock-on effect, etc.

> b) why can't they hire people to advise them while still managing the project themselves?

So, you're saying... diversity of thought might be useful?

Winter break is to save money on heating. Which is why it doesn't exist in lower latitudes of the US.
orbitur · 7 years ago
Just occurred to me, as "heat waves" become the norm for longer periods of time, I'm sure there will be people arguing for the cost-savings of not having to cool the school buildings during the summer.
