It is so fascinating how some cultures are just ready for different environments on this planet.

Authoritative collectivist monocultures are doing great with this pandemic, and that is practically the only combination that has a grip on things.

"Authoritative collectivist monocultures are doing great with this pandemic"

They are great at controlling the flow of information.

Is "The Dip" a worthwhile read?

I wonder what YCombinator thinks about career aptitude tests. Could the YC interview be replaced by such a test? I suspect the answer is no.

Wow, this is a coincidence. I've been languishing as a developer for 8 years, and languishing in the existential crisis of what to do with myself for many months. This is literally all I've been thinking about today, after recently having been rejected after 6 interviews. I don't know why I continued to pursue frontend/SWE as a career despite being terminated from every position I've held in the industry and repeated burnouts. The pay increases every time, and I dodge questions about my former positions as much as possible, but of the last decade I really only have about 3.5 years (generously) of experience. If I think about it, there's never really been any clear indication that I'd be good at the job, aside from being a capable programmer. It's really sad, and I don't really know how to pivot, because I don't really know why I'm not suited to it, or why I would be to something else. When I got my last job, I joked to my family that hopefully I'll be able to bank some of the salary before I get fired in 6 months. 6 months later, and now 8 months ago, I was. Now what? That's a tough question to answer, but maybe just letting go of being a software engineer would give me the clarity to find out.

Have you been working on any side projects? If you can finish and launch a software project, then you are OK. The consensus seems to be that interviews are bad at identifying capable people.

I think JK Rowling's Harry Potter books were rejected by 10 publishers, so fuck other people's judgement.

I agree that fact checkers are a nasty can of worms, but here they're only expected to flag illegal content, which I don't think is a comparable concern.
newsgourmet · 5 years ago
Unless it becomes illegal to post "false information", and the fact checkers get to decide what is false and what is not.

Technology is not the problem.

Flashback to 1995. I'm a 17 year old PFY invited to beta test a VR headset from a local company. My Uncle was an investor and I was technically savvy and the target market.

I had a copy of Descent that supported VR, and while it was a bit of a hassle to get setup, I got it working. The experience was incredible. After the first use I said to myself "this is the future". I had permission to test the headset for two weeks, and I wanted my friends to see it as well.

So I invited them over that weekend. And that's where the problem set in. When one person was using the headset, they were gone. You couldn't interact with them in any way. They might as well have been in a different room. Then I said to myself "this is not the future", and haven't touched VR since.

There is no amount of technology that can get over this problem. It's not about FOV or resolution or immersion. It's a social problem. If you live alone at home, and want to plugin then great. But if you live with someone, its distant, weird, and kinda creepy, to have the other person in a headset and unreachable.

The other day I was looking around in my living room and every family member was staring at a screen.

You just need a VR headset for everybody...

newsgourmet commented on Elderly patients 23% more likely to die if surgery is on the surgeon’s birthday   psychnewsdaily.com/elderl... · Posted by u/whx23
colonwqbang · 5 years ago
This is a beautiful conjecture!

The problem is amusingly circular. Even if you reject the conjure in parent comment, you will be tempted to reduce the number of birthday surgeries due to the increased mortality. This will mean that birthday surgeries are only done in even more desperate circumstances which of course will increase the risk.

So mitigation of this problem will lead to the percentage increasing even more! Actually, it turns out that it is possibly better if the percentage is high!

newsgourmet · 5 years ago
I think you have it backwards. The risk of the individual surgeries is not increased. Only the risk that a surgeon will be confronted with an above average critical surgery is increased.

It is not even clear that there actually is a problem. It's just a weird way to slice the data to produce an effect.

Article 19, Trusted flaggers

2.

The status of trusted flaggers under this Regulation shall be awarded, upon application by any entities, by the Digital Services Coordinator of the Member State in which the applicant is established, where the applicant has demonstrated to meet all of the following conditions:

(a) it has particular expertise and competence for the purposes of detecting, identifying and notifying illegal content;

(b) it represents collective interests and is independent from any online platform;

(c) it carries out its activities for the purposes of submitting notices in a timely, diligent and objective manner.

on a Single Market For Digital Services (Digital Services Act) and amending Directive 2000/31/EC

(50)

To ensure an efficient and adequate application of that obligation, without imposing any disproportionate burdens, the online platforms covered should make reasonable efforts to verify the reliability of the information provided by the traders concerned, in particular by using freely available official online databases and online interfaces, such as national trade registers and the VAT Information Exchange System, or by requesting the traders concerned to provide trustworthy supporting documents, such as copies of identity documents, certified bank statements, company certificates and trade register certificates. They may also use other sources, available for use at a distance, which offer a similar degree of reliability for the purpose of complying with this obligation. However, the online platforms covered should not be required to engage in excessive or costly online fact-finding exercises or to carry out verifications on the spot. Nor should such online platforms, which have made the reasonable efforts required by this Regulation, be understood as guaranteeing the reliability of the information towards consumer or other interested parties.

Not sure about your third point yet, I've only briefly jumped around in the (lengthy) full text.

In Germany Facebook has already given power to "trusted fact checkers" who happen to be extremely left leaning. None of this is a good thing.
