IMO search has had its goalpost moved. It used to be about scale, technical challenges, bandwidth, storage, etc. It is still about that, but a significantly harder challenge to solve has come up: searching in a malicious environment. SEO crap nowadays completely dominates search, Google has lost the war.

Simply put, I believe that Google sucks at search, in the modern context. It is great at indexing, it has solved phenomenal technical challenges, but search it has not solved. Why do I have to write site:stackoverflow.com or site:reddit.com to skip the crap and go to actual content? Why can my brain detect blogspam garbage in 0.5 seconds of looking but billion dollar company Google will happily recommend it as the most relevant result above a legitimate website?

I feel this 12 year old XKCD is still relevant: https://xkcd.com/810/ .

Because the site most likely is laden with Google Ads, it's in their interest to show you that garbage and not what you're actually looking for.

new_guy commented on What can this community do to help stop Putin?    · Posted by u/tanto

Start with self-examination.

Why are you so bothered about Putin invading Ukraine?

Where was the outrage, protesting and flag-waving when Israel is invading Palestine and shooting little kids daily? And America is bombing Yemen, Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan etc on a daily basis?

Don't get me wrong, it's all bad. But the general persons apathy and ignorance and ability to be manipulated by the media is just as bad as any actions Putin is taking.

I find dryers are particularly bad at this. Mine has 5 levels of dry-ness. Even on "ultra dry" the clothes usually come out damp. So I run "ultra dry" twice. Lol.
new_guy · 4 years ago
@dvtm if you're just going to hang your clothes up to dry, then what's the point of having a dryer in the first place?

With a ratelimit of 60 attempts per minute (which is significantly higher than any user would legitimately ever need) you're looking at thousands of years to bruteforce a random 6 character alphanumeric password.

This seems remarkably unintuitive, but the math checks out.

(26+10)⁶ = 2,176,782,336

1,450 minutes a day

2,176,782,336 / (1,450 * 60) = ~25,000 years

new_guy commented on Ask HN: Why don't many video hosting companies adopt PeerTube or P2P?    · Posted by u/arunharidas
new_guy · 4 years ago
Bitchute doesn't use P2P, but it's a HUGE part of their marketing. Their target demographic is technically illiterate so don't know any different, which really actually is a huge problem in general.

How many people fall for the latest buzzwords (like 'web3') without having the first clue what it is? Even investors aren't immune.

It just shows you're growing in your skills, I think there's very few people can look back at code they wrote even last week and not see where it could be improved.

I'd keep it as a record of your progress and just mark it as a toy project/not ready for production etc.
