nesky commented on Uber drivers in Kenya are ignoring the app and charging their own rates   restofworld.org/2024/keny... · Posted by u/Geekette

Drivers have creative ways of getting around rules in most markets. In India when you get a ride assigned the driver will first call you and check where you are going, and cancel the ride (or ask for extra money) if the amount or destination is not to their liking.

This happens here in the US as well. Especially for food delivery apps, the driver shown on the app will rarely be the person who actually does the delivery. This is because people create accounts and sell them to others who don't have legal status, and take a cut of their earnings.

Never considered this before but I'd be curious if the delivery apps have data where they can tell which drivers are using this tactic.
nesky commented on Hackers may have leaked the Social Security Numbers of every American   engadget.com/cybersecurit... · Posted by u/dataflow

Most of my life my SSN was also my drivers license number. Then my state a few years ago changed the numbers. Great! Now some hotels want to copy both sides of your license before renting you a room. My doctors office and local hospitals copy them too.

A few years ago, Capital One credit cards wouldn't let us pay our bill online, which we had done for several years, unless we sent them a copy of both sides of our DL's! I called them and said no thanks and they said I would have to began paying through the mail. We paid off both cards and canceled them.

Have said all this, it's prob just a matter of time before my DL number is hacked by someone through some weakly secured site.

What state has drivers license numbers the same as your social security number?

I have a 2021 Mazda and I can't say enough good things about it's infotainment interface. The dial and 5 buttons on the center console behind the shifter is wonderful, I can glance at the screen while using the dial and I know what each of the 5 buttons do across the system. I've been in a few vehicles from Honda, Toyota and Chevy and the Mazda is multiples better at interacting with the system while driving.

"Emergency" WFH at my workplace have been slashed, everyone back in full since the start of the month. No reason publically given, been privately told "not about people like you, but some others have taken a 2 year vacation so management is fed up". I have emails from the CEO personally thanking me for my commitment in going way over what was expected when basically saving the institution during lockdown, so now I also feel kind of personally insulted and victim of ham-handed collective punishment.

I hate being back: My gear at home is better, I have to work in uncomfortable clothes and at a room temperature that makes me sweat within minutes. I have to work in an N95 mask since we are packed in small 4 person cubicles and COVID numbers are still too high in my area. I'm spending more on gas and wasting time in traffic. I'm eating worse quality food. I keep getting interrupted by exactly those sames guys that took the 2 year vacation. I feel hard to concentrate and I'm angry all the time so my output has suffered.

I keep sending IMs to people I work with, we never need to actually meet.

Now you have to apply for a new more restrictive WFH scheme. Those wanting to sign up to it had a meeting with our direct manager where he tried to discourage us with thinly veiled threats about "special performance measuring procedures" and trite arguments about how it is unfair not being here for the people that want to come.

We applied the same, but now HR is telling us that they can't approve our WFH requests since they can't guarantee that our screen setup at home is safe and we haven't completed a "Data Display Device Setup and Handling" course in the last three years. They don't know when the course will be offered again. I've been programming for more than 35 years now, so again I kind of feel doubly insulted, both by the bare faced obstructionism and ridiculous particular hurdle.

I'd leave, I even feel I'm morally in the wrong for not leaving. But the thing is that the pay is good, that I'm of an age prone to experiencing ageism in the job market, and also this is a place where I have ample slack for tuning my output and inmerse myself in side projects or personal improvement, so their loss...

We start back at the office next week and this sums up exactly why I have no interest in going back full time.

Wasn't the bot that tracked Nancy Pelosi and Diane Feinstein banned? Curious to see if this goes the same route.

I never gave up on CDs or physical books. Though I use Kindle and a few years ago I subscribed to Google Music and stopped buying new CDs.

Lately, it is very rare that people discuss music. So recently, I moved my CD (& books) collection to living room and it has been good way to start conversations about music. Friends scan through the collection, sometimes, they borrow them. Album art is another thing that is fun to look at together. It feels a lot more social than sharing music on Facebook.

My only issue is I don't have a CD player anymore except in the car.

(Same thing with books, any book I buy on Kindle, I assume it is a rental. If I really like the book, then I get a paper copy.)

I purchase the physical books as well ones I bought on kindle or audiobooks that I think will age well, want to read again or want my kids to peruse at some point. Scanning a library on a kindle just isn't the same.

You are 100% incorrect. Not your keys, not your coins. Any meaningful amount of Bitcoin out to be stored on a hardware wallet.

If user can't be bothered to learn anything or read anything or accept months-pending Windows update, he should not touch cryptocurrency.

So, for the "average user", the answer is not storing on an online exchange, but to never touch cryptocurrency in the first place.

Do you have any preference towards a Ledger, Trezor or other?
