Bitcoin has been very stable against the USD for a while now.

And that's just bitcoin, stable coins are more reliable.

And of course inflation only robs holders, at least volatility goes in your favour half the time.

I also would not call it an investment: there is no reason to expect prices to rise. Bitcoin does not grow in the way a company can (making shares an investment) or pay interest like a bond. It's at best a speculative asset, like maybe gold?

>And that's just bitcoin, stable coins are more reliable.

Until they submit to agnostic third party audits, they're not stable.

Putting aside the privacy arguments, IMO there should be a simple case for quid pro quo import/export control.

China bans American software companies from their market, thus giving an advantage to local alternatives.

Those local alternatives on the other hand get unrestricted access to American markets.

Why exactly should they be allowed to operate?

Trade is always reciprocal, and software should not be an exception.

China doesn't have the same freedom of speech as the U.S.

You can't just ban companies because you want to. There are laws and protections from the government in place.

That's assuming that new facts never come to light over time.

Snopes is not a good reference to cite, they have changed many artlcles based on research they missed. They tend to just want to get a page up when a topic is popular, then research it later.

I mean, correcting factual errors is pretty good trait for a fact-checking site, right?

I think the video conference market success is also linked to increased prevalence of camera us - i.e. mobile plans finally support streaming, laptops carry a camera as standard, etc. (Covid also increased demand)

If you're going to speculate on what's next for communication, it's probably best to follow the technology.

The problem is, this is very open (or even designed) to be abused by their implementers. It's akin to having only Microsoft as the Secure Boot key authority.

Mobile devices already has tons of attestation features. Secure enclaves, security processors, cryptographic capabilities of SIM cards (e.g. I carry my private key inside my SIM card, and use it as a wet signature, legally).

We do not need this tech which can and will be abused to lock any tech savvy person from daily internet based on arbitrary rules. There are no checks and balances. This is a very broad set of capabilities which is forced upon users.

This is no proposal, or experiment. It's a force-push attempt.

Noob question: Can you do attestation with mobile web, or is it app only?

Criticize Google Maps all you want, but it is easily one of the most useful apps to me, especially as someone who's been been living nomadically the last 5 years. It's kind of scary how dependent I am on this app. Anytime I need to find a restaurant, dentist, electronics store, etc. - I'm looking first on Google Maps and my life is basically dictated by the results.

I have lists like "Places to Work" which is a list of all the nice coffee shops and places I like to work out of (currently have 200). I star hotels + AirBnBs I'm staying in, and bookmark a ton of things. I rely on it for public transportation. If I could only pick 3 apps on my phone, Google Maps would definitely be one of them.

I do wish there were better alternatives and I hate being overly dependent on one company. Unfortunately the open source alternatives like OpenStreetMap don't really even compare.

Even the hotspots functionality is useful - if I'm in a new city, I can see the highlighted areas where the best restaurants and bars are.

I banked with two credit unions and both nickel-and-dimed me with ridiculous fees. A coworker of mine has filed suit against the credit union at my current job.

I have banked with a huge commercial bank for the past twenty years and never had any issues. YMMV

minsc_and_boo · 2 years ago
My experience is the opposite - Chase nickle and dimed me and made me pay fees if I didn't jump through certain hoops. It made me go back to my credit union.

I moved cities 5 times in 8 years. The last thing I wanted to do is try and evaluate a credit union each time.

I look at it now and think about it, but I have to deal with international things and the last thing I want to deal with is trying to get a hold of my bank from ten timezones over.

minsc_and_boo · 2 years ago
Thanks to modern banking, you don't need to be in the same city as your credit union.

I've used the same CU for 20 years, the last 8 of which has been 2000 miles away from it.
