Until recently, if you offered a pump that _could_ be controlled by another device (such as a phone) you would have to offer your own "controller" device, even if 99.9% of your customers have a phone already.

So, this companion device is kind of a thing that Insulet had to release. You'll see this with CGM's too -- there's a small companion device sold with the Dexcom G7 (the "controller"), even though everyone just uses their phone.

This is kind of a regulatory quirk; basically from the FDA's point of view you had to have a complete standalone system, that did not include the phone, in order to be able to prescribe it. I think they do not require companion devices any more, it's OK to release something that requires the user to have a phone.

Its also for security.. outside the US, you still cant use a regular phone with the omnipod.

So can someone tell me - a non-insulin-dependent individual - why would an insulin pump need to be (controlled by?) a phone (in this case, the Nuu phone referenced)?

Surely there is a way to cheaply obtain bluetooth and a controller without saying "we'll just use this already existing hardware - that happens to be a whole-ass phone - because it's $5 from China"?

Kinda feels like that just screams data-stealing, regardless of where it was made.

Security… The PDM is walled off completely, it cant install apps, its not on wifi, you cant change any settings. The issue is that a PDM technically could easily kill you, by giving you a lethal dose of insulin.

Funny thing is that the newer Omnipod 5 from the same company works with regular phones now, but only in th US.

It had to be a law because children are people in Finland and most Nordic countries with rights that adults just can't take away.

Current legislation allows the teacher to tell a student to put their phone away in a pocket or backpack, for example, where it will not be a distraction.

The use of phones during breaks cannot be completely banned, as students have fundamental rights. The Constitution guarantees everyone the protection of property, which also applies to students' phones. Restricting the use of mobile devices must be considered from the perspective of freedom of speech and the protection of a phone call or other confidential message.

Section 12 from Finnish constitution:

-----

Section 12 - Freedom of expression and right of access to information

Everyone has the freedom of expression. Freedom of expression entails the right to express, disseminate and receive information, opinions and other communications without prior prevention by anyone. More detailed provisions on the exercise of the freedom of expression are laid down by an Act. Provisions on restrictions relating to pictorial programmes that are necessary for the protection of children may be laid down by an Act. Documents and recordings in the possession of the authorities are public, unless their publication has for compelling reasons been specifically restricted by an Act. Everyone has the right of access to public documents and recordings.

Yeah the first thing isnt 100% true, there is no law here in Denmark, but in many many schools, kids hand over their phones in the morning, and get them back at the end of the day. Is up to the schools how they want to handle it

> However, most game services tend to schedule their downloads in the middle of the night

Except that usually doesn't matter because almost all game updates are released slight before prime time (or on prime time) so players can enjoy it when they get home! (I guess this only applies to multiplayer games, but that's a MAJOR part of the industry nowadays).

martin_bech · a year ago
I would guess about 10% of an ISPs customers are gamers. Maybe lower. Again game updates are not that big, compared to your connection, so most of the day your connection is idle

Game downloads can be tens of GiB per day, and are only growing. Multiple 4K streams can add up. I wouldn't be surprised if folks are saturating links during prime time hours.
martin_bech · a year ago
Yeah.. they are not.. even tens of GiB per day is not a lot compared to your connections 1000gb/s. Netflix 4k stream is not the norm, and still only about 20mb/s so you would need to be running 50 4k streams, and even then, chances are you neighbours out of the house, or flipping instagram, so the bandwith is available..

Btw netflix did colocate with isps at one point, they might still do.

I worked at a large ISP and telco in my youth, and ofc this is how its done, its been this way forever, and is also basicly how phone networks where and are built, because you know that everyone is not going to call everyone at the same exact time, so you use an Erlang B calculation to figure out what you actually need..

For reference ths ISP i worked for, that was pretty damn big, started out with 40 modems, and that lasted a looong time..

Btw. Biggest issue with traffic when i worked there was the advent of p2p sharing, that required massive upgrades

It's great, until people realize GPT-3 will generate answers that are demonstrably wrong. (And to make matters worse, can't show/link the source of the incorrect information!)

Starting HVM in Sept does not mean you get Revenue in Sept. It takes months before volume reached, testing, packaging done and shipped. TSMC isn't unusual in stating it they wont get revenue from N3 until 2023.

It feels as though our society has collectively forgotten that mental illness can be socially transmissible. I remember in 00s there seemed to be mainstream acknowledgement and concern that anorexia and distorted perception of one's body can be socially transmissible, ripping through teen social cliches particularly, and could be spread through the internet by "pro-ana" websites and chat groups. I don't hear much about it these days though. Instead, internet media promoting mental illness seems more common than ever and with few exceptions (threads like this) I rarely see anybody express concern about it. What happened?

Fashion has moved on, so the anorexic has been largely replaced with bikini fitness. This is not a joke. You will also find that among bikini fitness athletes, you will find a lot who have been previously anorexic.
