Nicely written, I guess I’ve suffered from so much AI slop it’s nice to read something zing.

AI can easily write per your specs. I dont know why everyone chooses the default.

Kind of horrifying to think that the head of an intelligence agency thinks Russian and Python are the ones the tip of the spear needs to be fluent in.

What are some other really useful skills? AI/ML frameworks, data skills, cloud basics, embedded programming, PCB design, sensor integration, front-end, back-end/API, version control? That would just be a start. After that an MI6 hopeful would have to pick up some physics, materials science and basics of precision instrumentation so they can get a job at a Chinese foundry...for reasons. Oh, and they would have to be good at Mandarin, too. Nobody said spying was easy :)

For a second there I thought it was about public laundromats. Wondered why there were so many washer/driers in such a relatively small city.

He is a US citizen. Anyway, what's going in the US? Is ICE out on the streets literally snatching up people like those stray dog catchers in old cartoons? I left the US at the start of 2025 and LA streets were free from any ICE activity at the time.
manfromchina1 commented on Ask HN: Is it just me or techno-optimism died in the past few years?    · Posted by u/shubhamjain

> From 2010 to 2020, tech optimism was at its peak. Despite the flaws, companies like Airbnb, Uber, Amazon, and countless SaaS startups felt like they were genuinely improving things

These are some legendary American companies whose service made life more convenient, however I never felt they were earth shattering in the way other American inventions like the plane, the Internet, the mircochip, nuclear power, the light-bulb and the laser have been. Not to mention the personal computer and the smartphone that were also invented in America. I always thought the aforementioned inventions carried more heft. AI seems to me to be the only advancement on the same level of importance today.

This is the best thing we can wish for. These low-tech, mass-slaughter conflicts put Russians at severe disadvantage because of their low birth rates. A good "sink" for baddies where they disappear without a trace.
manfromchina1 · 24 days ago
I personally do not wish for this. Per the article they are committing these atrocities indiscriminately. African civilians are people, too.

I suspect a lot of people do. Probably a massive number. They just silently derive utility out of it. Those who hate it are probably more vocal.

I think that's orthogonal. The author is not saying that everything in every field is good: their TV example explicitly calls out bad TV.

What they are saying is that you can make yourself enjoy a field _at all_, in which you can then apply taste. For example I don't like whisky, but that's not a matter of me applying "good taste": I would never claim that whisky is bad in general and if I really tried I'm pretty sure I would start being able to enjoy whisky and separate the good from the bad (at least subjectively).

> I think that's orthogonal.

One time on 4chan I mentioned I liked how users on HN like to pepper their speech with little math words like so: "Love is orthogonal to distance, modulo trust, and the parameters aren’t marginal". People wouldnt believe me this was normal talk. Case in point. Although this was more prevalent on HN about 10 years ago. Or maybe now as well. I dont read comments as much these days.

manfromchina1 commented on China is eating the world   apropos.substack.com/p/ch... · Posted by u/sg5421

> A new authoritarian power revitalized the economy

Fantasy history there. No, the actual timeline: USA determined that USSR-CPC split and animosity were real and should be exploited. China, a social and economic basketcase, also saw the benefit of pivoting to the West.

Then (fortuitously for the Chinese ..) Mao died and Deng Xiaping came to power and then to the US and wore a cowboy hat! Western Capitalists* , whether due to their cupidity (or stupidity), convinced themselves that massive investment, funds, and technology transfer to Communist China would somehow engender a "liberal China" in a generation.

Even after CPC crushed the "liberal" front in its cadre in 1989, which should have been a wakeup call to the idiot class that rules the West, we had 8 years of Slick Willy letting China get their hands on all sorts of tech and secret in US and the West.

And now, the Orange Clown is finishing "the job" by laying waste to US aliances and institutions, making sure 21st is irrevocably the Chinese Century.

So that, hn, is how China actually got to "eat the world".

*: No that ain't you and that certainty ain't me and it's not even the fabled "10%". Try the 0.1%.

In this kind of analysis it is always something that is done to or for China. The latter never has any kind of agency. Neither the will nor mind of its own. If that were true China would have stayed a complete and utter shithole no matter the investment whether political, intellectual, financial or scientific.
manfromchina1 commented on Fear not, even AI engineers will be replaced by AI   doch88.github.io/2025/08/... · Posted by u/Doch88

So far all the headlines focus only on developers and other adjacent knowledge workers. Not enough fear porn. I think the range of everyone replaceable should be expanded. AI will start mining its own rare earths, pumping its own oil and generating its own electricity needs soon. Right up until it invents perpetual motion at which point everyone will be royally fucked or wont ever have to work again.
