I get that this lowers the barrier to entry, but presumably you could do something similar with a software package to make your laptop do the same thing? AFAIK it uses off the shelf radios and firmware so I don’t really understand the framing here that this device is ok but others aren’t. Especially as others point out it’s unlikely this has anything to do with making car theft easier nor to interfere in any way with the safe operation of the plane.

At one point there was an android that did the exact same attack as well. No need for an additional device.

If it's a question of UI only, Electron would be less bloated than a webserver? Arguably?

In a hypothetical organization where you have hundreds of more users needing to perform these tasks. Is it better to push and maintain software on hundreds of computers, or one server, that is probably multiple use to begin with. Containers are far easier than maintaining software across hundreds of devices.

Who would lobby your points? ACLU?

Word out to ACLU with their Mobile Justice app. Should be on everyone's phone just in case.

I just and looked for the app, and it isn't available on my device because it was made for an older version of Android :(

> The only solution is to self-host. Gitea is good.

I don’t understand your thinking and gitea’s marketing. They say in the same breath that it’s “self-hosting” and that they do “Git hosting… similar to GitHub, BitBucket, and GitLab”. — https://docs.gitea.com/

As far as I am aware, they do not offer a hosting service. I believe that statement was meant to convey that the Gitea software, once installed is a git host similar to the others. I think they were trying to differentiate between a typical remote git repo and all the web components that come with Gitea. They do offer paid support, but that's still for self hosting.

My understanding is that the main cause for failure was being brought up by private equity, loaded up with debt, and then being hit by huge interest rate rises.

Isn't this essentially the same thing that killed Toys-R-Us?
