One has to wonder who creates a fresh account just to troll against EVs. Fossil bots perhaps.

Can't rule out automated manipulation and bots on any social media site these days.

And how many of those are used by people who don’t need a massive white van?
llampx · 9 months ago
Why does it matter whether you think someone "needs" a pickup or not?

Align their crash ratings and NCAP values with every other car and the problem will take care of itself.

Personally I have the huge white vans because they reduce visibility when driving as well as while parked. I live in a big city and its difficult to drive when there's a wall parked at every other intersection.

> the roads are also being worn at a much faster rate due to the weight of the cars.

Are they actually being worn out at a much faster rate because of more EVs? Do we have any data?

It is amazing how much concern trolling there is about EVs on a site like this.

Rubber particles from tires are one of the main sources of microplastics.

The tires that are "disposed of" in the third world and then burnt?

Please stop it with the tyre nonsense.

The world is burning. Hundreds of millions people are going to die. We have a solution… and you won’t let us use it because it increases the rubber levels in people who lick tyres. As if that matters. So what if there are more rubber particles in their mouths? We can eliminate vehicle pollution!

Exactly. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

The average UK gardening truck is something like this: https://www.ford.co.uk/vans-and-pickups/transit-chassis-cab or the ubiquitous Hilux. The "I need an unreasonably large vehicle to take my kids to school" niche is filled by Land Rover, which are still slightly smaller than the F150.

US-style pickups exist mostly because of weird tax and emissions rules which should be harmonized with cars.

This is the truth and is basically protectionism for the Big 3 American automakers. Don't look for this to be fixed anytime soon. The system is working as intended.

Europe has plenty of gardeners and construction projects too, but I see at most one pickup truck per decade and it is always someone who definitely doesn’t need one and drives like they’re in a mad max movie.

If you think all truck owners actually need one, count how many of the ones you see are carrying some load and do the math.

Europe has plenty of massive white vans.

To those wondering about tire wear:

"Despite the slightly higher levels of tire wear from EVs, brake dust was found to be more unhealthy, as brake dust is much more likely to become airborne (>40%) than tire wear is (1-5%). So EVs create a lot less of the worse thing, and a little more of the less-bad thing."

I recently bought an EV and love it. I barely ever touch the brakes and the wheels stay clean, unlike my old BMW where the front wheels turned gray from brake dust very quickly.

Some comments here are looking for a 100% perfect solution, which doesn't exist. Transportation is polluting. Sorry but even public transportation is polluting, even if it is more efficient when its above a certain utilization. Where I live, some buses are EV and it is a joy to ride them compared to diesel ones.

With an EV there is less local pollution, less noise pollution, more dynamic response when needed and no need for wasteful oil "changes" where the old, dirty, useless oil doesn't just magically disappear.

Living in Europe this is much less of an issue. Yeah car drivers tend to oversee you but after a while you can anticipate their movements very often. I bike every day to work and the only semi-serious crash was 90% my fault because I was speeding lol

Europe is a big continent. Even within one city you can have neighborhoods with more aggro drivers than others. If there is a protected bike path I don't have problems taking it.

all that can be traced back to the British colonization and exploitation of India's wealth and resources. At least now, folks don't die of hunger.

The British Raj never died, the babus just took it over and sat down in the same chairs and kept the institutions running the same way.
