They are hiring, but the reason they can't find people isn't because there aren't people out there willing to do the job if it's fairly compensated. The problem is that trucking has lost a ton of upside over the last few decades, particularly after the Motor Carrier Act of 1980. Drivers are often paid per mile instead of per hour, which means long unpaid periods waiting for loads or stuck in traffic.

Regardless of the pay, I just can't imagine people really being excited to drive all day alone. I hate driving and I do it as little as possible. People like to be around other people when they work too.

That's not how any of this works. Automation like FSD will lead to cheaper shipping costs via trucks leading to more Trucks on the road and more needing to load/unload and manage last mile logistics and driving routes that can't be automated resulting in

... more trucking jobs, more loading/unloading jobs, more FSD operations jobs, more truck repair jobs, more software engineering jobs

This reminds me of how ATMs created more banking jobs because people started to use the bank more along with ATMs. ATMs handled the simple transactions and tellers dealt with the more complex tasks.

We'll see. There will be a loss of little industries that depended on truckers though, like truck stops and inns.

I also hope that this results in more jobs that are fulfilling.

AI is causing the unemployment or big tech is still downsizing after the influx of hiring done during and after the pandemic?

It's okay when large corporations download cars. But when you do it, you'll be in trouble.

He lead a mob of his audience to threaten families that just had a child in their family murdered based on lies. There's no price on how horrible that is. Argue all you want, it went through a long process to get to that number so good luck with that.

I've wondered why google hasn't attempted convergence earlier. It seems like the natural next step for PCs. But it seems like the motivation here is ultimately to use AI as they mention in step #5.

I wonder if something like https://www.razer.com/concepts/project-linda would ever get big in a world where everyone keeps their PC in their back pocket. Or maybe people would just settle on more of a stylus + nexus-size phablet if in the future handwriting-to-text models could get good enough to compete with a keyboard? Maybe this is a job for folding phone + tablet detachable keyboard/hinge.

Project Linda looks pretty cool and relatively practical since it lets you keep everything in one device. I have a PC, laptop, and mobile phone. This might bring it my devices to two.

Phones are getting so powerful that it seems like the logical next step.

lewdev commented on Ask HN: What is it with this hate and disdain for interns/junior engineers?    · Posted by u/colesantiago

Wow, it’s got this bad? Seems like a race to the bottom at this point, without training youngsters how are new generations supposed to get into the industry?
lewdev · a year ago
I can imagine that training only leads to bearing fruit in other companies if the junior/intern decides to leave.

Many years ago, I was basically an it guy in a rust belt city with a slightly inflated title and no cs degree. I started blogging about interactive web development as I was teaching myself. A year later I decided to look for a new job.

To my surprise, that website got me past pretty much every first round, and within 2 weeks of starting to send applications I had 5 job offers at 2-3 times my current salary.

I relocated to Chicago and the entire trajectory of my career changed. I will always recommend blogging or some form of content creation. Especially for someone thinking of a career pivot.

It keeps you focused on deliverable products from your learning and experience.

Helps keep you consistent if you have a posting schedule.

Creates tangible evidence of your skills and experience.

And perhaps most importantly. It really improves your communication skills around the problem space which is a huge benefit.

What blogging platform did you use?

That's an amazing story! I feel motivated to start blogging myself.

It's 100% a scheme to do mass layoffs without having to pay severance.

WFH is so awesome and everybody loves it. Take that away and you know people will leave on their own.
