Why is no one talking about Brexit in this whole equation? Yeah world is facing the brunt, but UK more so.
kumoflow · 2 years ago
Because all of europe is in the same or worse place? No matter how much remainers want to blame brexit for everything, it isnt’t always the case. Central europe is around or a few points less than the um while easter and western europe are higher

I kind of agree but you can't be absolutist either. If a mob boss says "kill this guy" to one of his hitmen, and the guy kills him. Only the hitman goes to jail? The mob boss just used his freedom of speech but didn't act?
kumoflow · 3 years ago
Well depends, do you want to get the mob boss on ‘hate/prohibited’ speech or for ordering a Hit?

He could just go ‘i really don’t like this guy’ and that would be understood at ‘kill him’ without him saying. Would that be ok or you still would want to prosecute him?

Yes, it's a small program but it has created some negative side effects - although you could also consider them positive, depending on your viewpoint. I've been living in Lisbon for 14 years as a EU citizen and currently have to renew my permanent residency card. Unfortunately, the authority SEF responsible for that is not reachable. Online processing doesn't work, making an appointment online doesn't work, writing emails returns auto-replies to call them, and I've given up via phone after more than 60 trials. Even when you get a connection, they don't respond. So I've contacted an immigration lawyer, and they several times mentioned "Gold Visas" and later sent me an offer: 500.- EUR for an appointment they would make with SEF. This might sound like nothing to people from elsewhere but these are substantial amounts for someone with a Portuguese salary. However, this would be peanuts for a Gold Visa applicant.

Problem is sef has been extinguesh (but not really) a few years ago due to an high profile case with them beating to death a ukranian man. For the ‘left’ in this country it is also considered a racist institution. Problem is, as with all that is done in this country, they announce the end, make no real plans for alternatives, leave the people working there in a limbo, noone gets hired and people leave, but they get more and more work to do with the immigrant influx.

The golden visa wasnt already the big deal since it wa slimited, but the digital nomad visa (over two thousand issued in just a few months) and the open door policy of this government (you dont need even a promis eof work anymore to just come to portugal) overwhelmed the services. And then there is the stupid laws that lawyers and other classes working in behalf of clients have priority in these services

LOL, dear downvoters, tell me more about my TV, muhaha.

I have an LG tv and have no problems, but not regarding that, Apple uses LG displays on their macbooks and ipads (not sure about the 5k imac). This is probably why you are being downvoted.

If you're worried about dangerous transportation, you must be positively outraged by the millions killed every year by cars, right?
kumoflow · 6 years ago
That isn't really fair.

You are comparing something that has laws and rules, a dedicated place to 'drive' and have billions of miles driven.

Right now in most places these scooters follow whatever laws they want (if faster in middle of street, it is there, if faster on sidewalk, it is there). People aren't accountable (no driver license, hard to track) and idiots.

Well, I'd say anybody that can't find a fun vacation staying at a hostel in Europe and walking around the middle of pretty much any city must surely have no imagination and/or also hate life in general.
kumoflow · 6 years ago
Or they don't like that?

I don't take 'vacations' per se. When I travel I like to go with a goal, let it be snowboard for a week or surf for the weekend in a nice spot, or just stay at a 5 star hotel drinking gin and tonic by the pool.

Any kind of city 'vacation' for me is hell. Hate it. Did many before, still hate them. Go see the Mona Lisa or some natural lake? bleh. Boring. Rather be at home drinking gin and tonic in my sofa doing nothing all day.

(to be fair, I lived in many countries, moved house and cities (and countries) pretty much every year. I've seen most of Europe has to offer (and didn't like it) and now nothing is better than just living near the sea. Spending some quality time with local friends and go surf or to the gym.

I'm not happy about it, because I have Caps mapped to control, and last I checked, you can't map the bottom-left ctrl key to Esc. I actually don't have a MacBook anymore because of this.
kumoflow · 6 years ago
System Preferences->Keyboard->Modifiers

You can swap Control to Espace there (probably the same place you mapped Caps to Control???)

As a parent, I feel that I have some responsibility to provide my daughters with the best life outcome possible.

Examples of failed life outcomes would be drug addiction, poverty, suicide, or dying alone with their cats. There are many more.

In general, unrestrained sexual behavior tend to be bad for your odds ratio. That's not even getting to positive life outcomes, which involve developing fully as a human being, and with full and deep relationships to the other human beings around you. Unrestrained sexual behavior tends to be bad for this too.

In case you've ever wondered, this is also why sex on television is so much worse than violence on television. Seeing a murder on television doesn't really alter my children's odds ratio for becoming a violent criminal too much. But seeing a lot of sex on television makes it much more likely that they'll take sex less seriously than is good for them.

kumoflow · 6 years ago
Why then we don't have this 'epidemic' in Europe where sex on tv isn't seen as a big boogie man. Where you can easily go places where kids will see adults of the opposite sex naked (saunas and gyms).?

I don't understand why you think seeing violence on tv (teen gangs beating a kid for his sneakers or whatever) won't affect your daughter, but seeing a couple have sex (not porn, just an overview of a sexual act) can corrupt her!

> Messi

One of my assertions is that Messi hasn't proven himself to be a GOAT until he's been great somewhere else. It's easy* to perform at a high level when the entire team is built around you as at Barcelona. In non-Messi-specific environments (ie Argentina national team), he just doesn't perform as well.

Whereas Ronaldo, on the other hand, has done it in several distinct environments and elevated the teams he's been in (which I guess makes him a "true" 10x player?)

kumoflow · 6 years ago
But still is the same thing. If Ronaldo, the best player in the world, would be considered a 10x player, it would mean that him and just a goal keeper would be able to compete with other professional teams, which we all know is bullocks.

The original 10x term was about productivity (and namely, lines of code that is pretty much bunk).

For me is always about what is a 1x developer. If we consider them a professional developer that does their tasks (somewhat) on time, documented, and with minimal bugs, which I would consider the baseline for what I would call a professional developer, I have a strong opinion you won't find 10x developers compared to this.

On the other hand, if a 1x developer is a person that can't create a simple algorithm(fizzbuzz), copy pasts code from every possible source, including his own code from file A to file B, etc etc, then sure, 10x developers are there, but this is because we set the bar too low.

A 3 month period of the police targeting this property crime would be awesome.
kumoflow · 6 years ago
I would rather see the police spend 3 months ticketing everyone for littering. They are leaving shit on the sidewalks with no licences to do so.

I would also like to see them ticketing the riders for reckless driving/endangering of the people. I almost had an accident 2 weeks ago because some stupid riders decided to race on the street. I also see some of them riding in the sidewalks zipping through pedestrians and many times hitting their bags.
