kimbernator commented on How to install TrueNAS on a Raspberry Pi   jeffgeerling.com/blog/202... · Posted by u/furkansahin

I haven't used TrueNAS since it was still called FreeNAS.

I liked FreeNAS for awhile, but after a certain point I kind of just learned how to properly use Samba and NFS and ZFS, and after that I kind of felt like it was just getting in the way.

Nowadays, my "NAS" is one of those little "mini gaming PCs" you an buy on Amazon for around ~$400, and I have three 8-bay USB hard drive enclosures, each filled with 16TB drives all with ZFS. I lose six drives to the RAID, so total storage is about ~288TB, but even though it's USB it's actually pretty fast; fast enough for what I need to for anyway, which is to watch videos off Jellyfin or host a Minecraft server.

I am not 100% sure who TrueNAS is really for, at least in the "install it yourself" sense; if you know enough about how to install something like TrueNAS, you probably don't really need it...

I was like this in the "I love to spend a lot of time mucking about with my server and want to squeeze everything out of it that I can" phase.

In the last few years I've transitioned to "My family just wants plex to work and I could give a shit about the details". I think I'm more of the target audience. When I had my non-truenas zfs set up I just didn't pay a lot of attention, and when something broke it was like re-learning the whole system over again.

Yet again, Google announces another lineup of phones where a vast majority of the announcement is about software features that could be implemented on existing devices, highlighting the wastefulness of the yearly release cycle.

Exactly - they might have something to gain by convincing others it is true for example.

There are non-nefarious reasons, too. If someone is unsure whether something is real they could upvote it to increase visibility and discussion.

Pardon my asking, but how do cigars compare?
kimbernator · 23 days ago
I'm not who you asked, but it's not typically comparable since you don't traditionally inhale cigar smoke and therefore don't usually absorb nearly as much nicotine.

I will also add to the discussion that disposable vapes (in the USA) tend to be outrageously high in their nicotine content. If you buy the juice yourself you have options to choose much lower nicotine per volume compared to these disposables (and will be a lot cheaper in the mid-term/long-term). A lot of devices these days curb the issue of replacing your own coils too, as that used to be a common issue.

But please don't start vaping if you don't already smoke. There's also the discussion of tobacco-less nicotine pouches that have hit the scene; on average they have higher nicotine content than regular tobacco pouches. And the same issue applies, as it's also acceptable to partake of them anywhere at anytime.

What's the common understanding of nicotine these days? I haven't thought about this much since the early e-cigarette days around 2011, but back then the common discourse was that 1. It's really hard to measure nicotine in a cigarette in a comparable unit to vaping due to the difference in how they are consumed, and 2. Nicotine itself isn't particularly harmful, and its addictiveness is dramatically accelerated by the other things in cigarettes.

Anecdotally, I vaped (at what might be considered a high amount of nicotine) for years and basically just decided it wasn't for me one day and stopped without any drama.

Given that vaping has come a long way since then I'm certain there is a more modern understanding of these things.

I have two elementary school age boys, and one day I complained about someone who was vaping and they solemnly informed me that vaping was more deadly than smoking. This is what they had learned in school; the anti-vaping hype was so aggressive that it had gone to the point and then right past it.

If you're going to use a nicotine product, please vape. Also don't vape. But smoking is so much worse that they're not in the same league.

I can't stand that this thought has permeated as much as it has. The magnitude is entirely different, and when I try to make that point I'm always seen as pro-vaping. The fact that barely any kids are smoking is a bigger deal than the fact that more of them are vaping. The vaping is still a problem, but it's a huge success that we've come so far from the problem it replaced.

Daily volume could just be more bluray high quality downloads with people with better internet. And not neccesarily larger number of people right?

I would be pretty surprised if the quality of rips since 2017 would account for a 20x increase in traffic.

Male chicks make as good of soup as hens. However, roosters are assholes and don't get along with other roosters by the time they are butcher weight.

It sounds like (based on the article), large-scale companies will usually either do eggs or chicken meat, not both. So you're not wrong but I see why it's not that simple.

The tyre pressure sensor you can make an argument to be required by law as uneven tyre pressures can negatively effect handling.

However the backup camera being required by law is absolutely ridiculous. You can just either use the mirrors or turn your head.

kimbernator · 2 months ago
From what I'm seeing after some basic googling, there is a fairly pronounced effect in terms of collision rates when people have backup cameras. And a small screen hooked up to a camera is pretty benign in terms of complexity.

If the US weren't so obsessed with enormous cars with terrible visibility, I think this would be a different conversation.

> On the timescale of 30 years for gov bonds vs diversified US stocks, this is almost meaningless statement. The longer a risky asset is held, the less chance of loss you’ll have. Short-horizon returns are extremely volatile, but that volatility "mean-reverts" over time.

This is only true if you look back 30 years. What will happen in the next 30 years? Do you know for sure?

kimbernator · 3 months ago
Realistically, all that actually matters is where I land relative to the population at large. Since so much of the world economy is tied to stocks, by buying into it I will remain at least at parity with my current socioeconomic status regardless of whether the market goes up or down. Nobody with real money is just holding it in cash in case the whole stock thing doesn't work out.

If things go the way they have been for a while now, I'll be able to retire comfortably. If stocks don't gain or lose a penny for the next 40 years, I think society as a whole will have reframed retirement. If society collapses, it didn't matter anyways.
