If this app took off then I'm sure this would be the eventual reality.

So every time a 0day is released you buy a net new device? Cause there are 0days like... every day.

It's one thing if it's your laptop, but another if it's a system with billions of users.

Can anyone tell me why Fortnite doesn't seem to have as bad of a problem as CoD?

My son plays both, but CoD really sucks. It is so obvious when someone is cheating.

I think Fortnite uses a projectile bullet model while Call of Duty is all hitscan, but I could be mistaken. It’s been years since I played a CoD game.

It's lazy, ugly, inefficient, unclear, and ugly to look at
justwalt · 4 years ago
Lazy? Unclear?

I would imagine it takes much more work to design something skeuomorphically than it would something flat. And clarity is the top priority - you should instantly know what the thing does upon seeing it.

This title was very hard for me to parse. I think I reread it almost ten times.

Bezos is a huge Trek fan, so he'd be equally mortified is my guess.
justwalt · 4 years ago
I’m sure Bezos would feel bad for anyone’s death in this case.

I'm really glad that my employer is flexible about the time I start working. That way, whenever the clocks are set to/from DST, I just start work an hour earlier or later and my sleep remains unaffected.
justwalt · 4 years ago
I do the same thing and it’s great. You don’t lose an hour of sleep in the spring.

It's as if work is just toiling, but in reality it is not. Some people may just love meeting people and calling the shot. Some people may just love reading papers and tweaking and building systems. Some people may just love deriving equations and writing papers and giving talks. They call such activities work, but they enjoy doing them.

What matters is not hours but choice: can one choose to use her time at her own will? If she can, then I don't see any issue at all.

justwalt · 4 years ago
This is completely tangential to your point, but why did you choose to use “she” as the pronoun in your last sentence? I see this more and more frequently, and I assume it has something to do with being more inclusive (so as not to imply only a man could be the subject), but I don’t want to assume. Why not use “they” instead?

I've been thinking about building a new PC, mostly for development (if the budget allows also for a bit of gaming), and was wondering what components to pick to reduce latency and to get a satisfying feeling of "immediacy". Like when I first got an SSD and apps started instantly. Or when I got my first > GHz PC and optical mouse, and the cursor moved so smoothly it was uncanny.

For input to screen latency, I think wired keyboard and mouse would be important. For "instant app opening" a recent CPU and enough RAM, and a NVME SSD. But beyond that I'm not sure. Does anybody have any recommendations or tips? Does a 140 Hz or G-Sync monitor help? Are there any pitfalls (I've heard anecdotically that some CPU power saving states can cause micro-stutter)?

justwalt · 4 years ago
A 144hz monitor makes a huge difference. It will cut the inherent max latency of a display frame from 16ms to 6ms. They feel amazing.
