jrwiegand commented on What if we made advertising illegal?   simone.org/advertising/... · Posted by u/smnrg

It's interesting, I have been saying a much less intelligible version of this from observing my children. They have been exposed to services without advertising, and as soon as they see an ad... "Another commercial!!!". A part of me hopes their entire generation can develop a disdain for advertising based on the negatives they can see in their parents.

This is a wonderful piece and I am glad that I came across it. The line that really hit home for me is the description attached to the photos with his girls. I have two young girls now and I take it to heart that right now may be the best time in my life. This sentiment has been something I have heard from many people about their children at this young age. This is just more confirmation to slow down pay attention.

I was wondering after watching the video whether there could be an emergency bridge closure protocol if a ship veers off its intended course. It naively looks to me like there would be sufficient time to log the course deviation and stop vehicles from entering the bridge with lights and sirens and stuff.

This was exactly what I was thinking, too. Systems could be set up to monitor the trajectory of objects moving around a structure and then alerting and closing bridges or tunnels.

Local to the area. This was devastating news to wake up to. I don't know what's wrong with me but seeing this and knowing there were casualties made me cry.

Edit: Maybe I'm just tired and need more sleep.

It is shocking and that does not sound like an inappropriate response.

Not that it matters to anyone else, but having driven across that bridge dozens of times with my kids, this is just shocking. It’s one of the main corridors in the area. Thank god it happened in the middle of the night, though that’ll be no consolation to the families of those who may have died.

That was my exact thought. Thankfully, I woke up to messages that my family members were safe and sound. I hope they find everyone but at this point it seems unlikely.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

I appreciate the banner color update as well.

Interesting, I watched a video about this topic a while back[0].

I don't remember it exploring the larger impacts related to government and such but instead digs into how exactly airlines make money from this system.

>On an aside, it seems the market can't ever get a break. If it crashes and unemployment skyrockets, it was due to some fat cats gambling. If the market skyrockets and unemployment is high, now the fat cats are making money off the backs of everyone else. If the market skyrockets and unemployment is low, well, everyone isn't sharing in the gains equally.

I mean...this was due to fat cats gambling. Illegal gambling in fact. What else do you call shorting 140% of a company's stock?

Also, this might just be me, but it feels disingenuous for you to not mention a disclaimer while posting this that you're a quant trader at a market maker.

EDIT: As others have pointed out I seem to be misinformed about the legality of it, but my original point does stand. This IS happening due to fat cats gambling, and retail investors catching wind of it and blowing it up on social media (to be clear I'm aware that the majority of GME holders are still institutional)

As other comments have said, this is not illegal. Matt Levine explains better than I could here [1].
