joshontheweb commented on Ask HN: What is your playbook for profitable SaaS without outside investment?    · Posted by u/_448
joshontheweb · 5 years ago
I was able to bootstrap a SaaS business by working as a contract engineer half to three quarters time and building my company in the remaining time. I lowered expenses by moving in with family and eventually to SE Asia until profitability. This meant I had infinite runway but also it took longer . I prototyped for six months and then ran/tested the service for free for almost two years before it was ready for paid plans. Then it went from 0 to ~15k MRR in the first month. A couple of tricks like requiring Dropbox connection for users file storage and utilizing webrtc’s p2p capabilities helped keep running expenses manageable during the lead up to profitability.

Looks like forced obsolescence. My former daily driver a 2015 Macbook Pro has somehow become so slow it struggles with the most basic tasks, even after a fresh install. Nothing seems wrong with it other than it's slow to the point that browsing the web is a pain and development work has become impossible. Wasn't like that when I bought it.

Could be dust buildup inside causing overheating and cpu throttling

Because rural life is fundamentally economically inefficient, so they can't pay more. Transportation and overhead is too expensive. It only works if its subsidized by altruism of the urban economy, or a huge portion of locals learn the skills for themselves.

Or if we bring the inflated costs of medical school down.

I had literally the exact same experience as your first two paragraphs. Where my experience diverged is when I met a doctor of some kind who explained that it's the same kind of pain that truckers often get for resting their arms on the armrests. Turns out it was because I was resting my arms on the keyboard or the desk between me and the keyboard. Stopped doing that, the pain went away completely within a few days, and hasn't come back since. That was like 4 years ago. Just don't rest your arms on anything, that's the trick.

Interesting. Could you be more specific about where your pain was located? Was it in you arms or wrists?

I'm really happy about the return of the SE sized phone. I had been planning buy used SE's if I needed a replacement of my current one. I've got an iPad Mini that I can take with me if I want a bigger screen. When I don't, it's really nice to have a compact and capable phone that you don't need two hands to use.
joshontheweb commented on PeerJS simplifies WebRTC peer-to-peer data, video, and audio calls   peerjs.com/... · Posted by u/based2

It‘s not exactly dead, but also not very active either.

Thanks for suggesting simple-peer. But as far as I can see it does not offer a simple signaling approach like PeerJS. In PeerJS you can just use a simple ID to connect two peers. Either by using the public PeerJS signaling Server or by hosting your own instance.

joshontheweb · 7 years ago
Worth noting that simple-peer has a companion library simple-signal for the signaling side.
