I'm not a camera enthusiast - but are these cameras still "worth it" to go through all the effort for their qualities, or is this closer to a vintage computer enthusiast just cracking away at something because it's a challenge?

Very interesting route to go through to get the camera working again!

I have an NX Mini (which isn't exactly the same as the regular NX line) which has a "1 inch" sensor and a 3-lens interchangeable system. With the 9mm fixed lens it's as pocketable as a phone, but with a flip-out screen, a real flash and otherwise much better quality. With the 9-27mm zoom lens it's even a reasonable portrait camera. I haven't found one of the 17mm f/1.8 lenses, they're pretty rare.

Anyway, I really like that little thing. With a C-mount lens adapter I can use surveillance camera lenses which is pretty fun.

The dynamic aspect seems weird to be for a well-known. Are there other well-knows that are similarly dynamic?

Yeah I'm not sure that the content negotiation would work very well if you're using a plain webserver or storage service to serve static content.

Isn't Delta-Sigma and PDM exactly how DSD works? In fact, I think Sony originally came up with DSD as an intermediate representation of PCM in one of their DACs and then Sony & Phillips got the harebrained idea to use it in SACD. That is to say, a simple DAC for DSD is just a capacitor functioning as a low-pass filter, without any other components.

The worst connector for that problem is those ----ing antenna leads your laptop has for an M2 wifi card.
jdfellow · 2 years ago
I believe those are MCX. My Shure SE215 IEMs (earphones) use the same connector.

I thought Ardour was a commercial product? If you want to download a binary from their site it's either a demo version with injected silence every 10 minutes, or a paid-for option (either a small monthly sub or a larger one-off payment). You can build it locally yourself for free of course, but I don't know if many non-devs would do that.

There's also a distinct commercial DAW based on Ardour called Harrison Mixbus.

Got a lot of use out of his site over the years. What's nice about it is that he's so friendly. I get mixed vibes from various bike communities though.

I always enjoy the folks in bike shops in the cities I live in. I'm definitely not in their 'scene,' but they're super passionate about bikes and cycling as a primary mode of transportation and really want to get as many people on board as possible. I've heard people accuse them of being elitist or whatever, but even in the most notoriously hipster spots, I've always found them just as happy to fix up some kid's beat up used Walmart Schwinn as they are troubleshooting some alignment problem on someone's custom fixie.

That's feels very different to me than the parts of the more "serious" long-distance/touring/sports cyclist crowd I've been exposed to. The folks I've known in person that don lycra and speed down pretty country roads didn't seem unusual, but in groups, they seem like one of the most gatekeep-y, Mean Girls crowds I've encountered. Better have the 'approved' goals, gear, practices and perspectives if you want to sit with them at lunch. Practical transportation cyclists should keep walking, unless they're doing it in full racing gear with clips, wrap-around shades and a helmet that looks like a heavier duty version of what they wore in tron. If you're not cycling hard enough to need a shower once you get to work, you're not really cycling.

Maybe it's a tiny vocal minority? Maybe they're people that are "online only" enthusiasts trying to be cool? I dunno... but it just seems very punitively conformist.

There's a big old rules list[0], which I can never tell is satirical or not, that those road bike racers adhere to.

Why name something that involves code "Grasshopper" when there's been a popular product for 15 years called Grasshopper? [0]

It seems like some people just don't bother to do a basic search to see if their new product name is going to add confusion.

Well, it is based on Locust so there's at least some rhyme or reason to the name.

What makes it the golden age? I’d much rather have Raiders of the Lost Ark than Metropolis.
jdfellow · 2 years ago
There's a long-standing convention of "golden age" meaning the first age, when an art came into its own. A "silver age" follows if there's a revolution in the art, often with some sort of decline between.

Somewhat of a precedent exists: classic UNIX mbox files.

I guess it would be fine if indexed separately. Edits to data past a certain age are fairly rare.
