I'm not a lawyer, but that's not how I read it. The appeal by Yahoo! was dismissed according to the wikipedia article, as I read it. How did you read it?
indecisive_user · 18 days ago
The first court ruled in Yahoo's favor and the appeals court ruled that neither it nor any lower court in the US had the power to adjudicate the matter altogether, which was kind of a loss for both yahoo and the French organization.

The C-Suite is so highly paid and lives such a comfortable life that they can't even fathom how much productivity is lost by the average individual commuting for an hour and having to bounce for kids/family/home/medical issues.

They truly don't understand why people may want to leave work, be at home when they themselves have ZERO chores to deal with.

And they also don't understand why people are not as passionate as themselves about the work - when they make millions every quarter but the average person just gets by.

Empathy is not what C-Suite operates on because they have lost those empathy brain cells by virtue of living a life SO PRIVILEGED that even a basic middle class life with no help, appointments, kids, schools, rent, is unimaginable to them.

Let's not be too hyperbolic here. The average mid-level dev at Amazon is making over $250k while the average senior makes over $400k (source levels.fyi) so they're hardly "just scraping by" and can afford many of those same life comforts.

Adding to that: once you’ve shown that keeping rates high while allowing greater vacancies works, no one is going to lower rates afterwards. So we are stuck with this higher rent environment.
indecisive_user · a year ago
It's only profitable because of price fixing. You don't have to worry about vacancies when all your competition has agreed not to undercut you.

Without the price fixing though, apartment complexes will actually have to compete against each other on rent.

Yes… a major tourist attraction in… Oklahoma. I’m sorry, but nobody is looking to go to Oklahoma on their vacation, especially not to see a tall building.
indecisive_user · 2 years ago
It's like a 90min flight and $120 ticket for me. I would absolutely make a trip out there to see the tallest building in the US, especially with how out of place it would look next to the rest of the skyline.

> You're certainly setting a floor for your monthly housing costs, but there's all sorts of maintenance costs that crop up, unexpected repairs, and ever-increasing property taxes.

As a renter, these costs are essentially passed on to you anyway, so there's functionally no difference.

indecisive_user · 2 years ago
The difference is in predictability.

When you sign a 12 month lease, you know more or less how much you'll spend towards housing for the next year and it's easy to accurately predict a cost ceiling.

When you own a home, you know the minimum you'll spend is the mortgage+taxes but in an unlucky year your AC goes out and you get a hole in the roof that insurance doesn't cover and suddenly you've spent 20k that you didn't plan on.

Does any other cloud provider have the extra compute necessary to run ChatGPT just lying around?

With the current shortage of hardware, it's not as simple as "scaling up" if the resources literally don't exist.

"We" aren't a single unit. Some of "us" could lose billions of dollars and still never have to worry about money
indecisive_user · 2 years ago
How many billions are you talking here?

A billion dollars split evenly over the US population nets around $2.98 per person, so we're gonna need a lot to really make any appreciable difference.

Companies never give anyone 2 weeks notice. They do not deserve it, and no one should give it, unless they have passion about the team and project they are leaving, and even then they should just wrap that up before giving notice.
indecisive_user · 2 years ago
Most large companies that do layoffs give over a month of notice+severance. Perhaps they're not required to, but to be given less than a 2 week heads up with no severance is pretty rare.

I agree that interest rates have essentially driven most of the layoffs recently. Debt that used to cost 10c on the dollar to service has started to cost 2 dollars. If your expenses don't give, then your profits will. And potentially your liquidity.

But it's kool-aid drinking to assume a company that is over aggressive at hiring in a bull market and fires in a bear market will create more wealth. Wealth for whom is the better question to ask — certainly not the thousands of laid off employees.

>Wealth for whom is the better question to ask — certainly not the thousands of laid off employees

I think that depends on the pay structure. If a large part of your compensation is in stock then you'll still benefit from the additional wealth creation. Assuming a decent severance package it's certainly possible you come out ahead compared to the more conservative company, even being laid off.

How about research into whether a 55 year old actually requires the T levels of a 25 year old or whether they can make do naturally?
indecisive_user · 2 years ago
If I could choose between feeling like a 55 year old and a 25 year old, why would I pick the former?

If there are no major health consequences then what's there even to consider outside of cost?
