I worked in Raymond St. Leger’s lab for a short time in college. I can pass along any questions you have, and will send him the link to this discussion.

Great work! Does this method have any distinct advantages over infecting mosquitos with Wolbachia? Thank you.

There was an earlier thread on tinnitus https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21572827 where people had some techniques for relief. Maybe this could be useful.

I live with children in a very old house. I would love to be able to measure my children's lead exposure and check things like window paint or house dust for lead content to see how big a problem there is.

How do I do that?

hyencomper · 5 months ago
You can buy a Lead Test Kit and check it yourself https://www.epa.gov/lead/lead-test-kits

The machines will have owners; likely, these owners will be very few due to the concentration of wealth that they will have accumulated by the time we reach full automation.

So, probably a guy will own all the agricultural automation, another one the warehouse automation, another one the software, etc.

Then there will also be the resource owners (probably states or big landlords). Since resources are finite (land, minerals), the automation owners will need to pay for these.

Among these folks, there will be an exchange of money.

So, for the rest of us, if we don’t own some resource, the outlook does not seem very bright. Maybe prostitution to the owners will be the only available job.

I think there would be open-source machine variants that many people could own and modify. As population growth is slowing, finite resources should hopefully have a better and wider distribution among people as they would not be constraints.

Incredible news! This should be replicated in tropics everywhere. In Singapore, the government is using Wolbachia mosquitoes to control the spread of vector mosquitoes, which looks like another effective solution.

Saw the same thing. Laziness is not the issue, it's addiction to algorhithmic content. Algophilia, if you will.

I checked if Algophilia is a thing. Algophilia. noun. - sexual pleasure derived from inflicting or experiencing pain

Yes, I took a math course on it way back in college but I haven't ever considered using it professionally. Heck in college I did it by hand.

I've never had to say, help design a $100 million server farm. I've had a desire recently to strive to be that level of professional.

My question was more about in the hn world where is this stuff used

hyencomper · a year ago
In a professional context, I use it to help a client (chemicals company) optimize their deliveries to customers. They have > 100 production sites and thousands of customers, so LP is used to allocate customers to production sites based on the product-cost and availability at supply site and trucking costs. We have evaluated multiple solvers (Gurobi/ Llamasoft/ GAMS/ LocalSolver etc) for optimizing deliveries, as well as evaluating the cost impact of changes to the delivery network.

Sorry to be that guy, but nonplussed means something like "so taken aback, you're dumbstruck." Maybe you meant this, but more often people mean the opposite because of the "non" suffix [edit: prefix].

Anyway, you can smell the bad chemicals in plastics? I've never thought about it, but you're right there is a certain smell.

hyencomper · a year ago
Nonplussed can mean either, just discussed here a month ago https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40197346

This comes at a very opportune time in my life. when, my ward enters their HS -Junior year and they are taking SVC. Question to the Author(in case they are monitoring this thread), is it appropriate for a High-schooler with just an intro to Python?
hyencomper · a year ago
IMHO a HS student learning Calculus should first learn the subject with pen and paper for a while before programming. It is important to work through the problems and think about the fundamental concepts involved, rather than thinking about the syntax involved in coding their solutions. Practising with pen and paper helps to internalize the subject matter better.

Agree. I was a died-in-the-wool drip-hating espresso snob until we were getting some work done on the house and our espresso machine had to go into storage. Then I was forced to learn to make nice drip coffee and aeropress and now I can make basically all the types of good coffee. It's a valuable life skill for sure.

The real crime is most people make drip coffee too weak or with bad beans (or badly-ground beans).

Just being pedantic - it is dyed in the wool, not died :)
