What I see is going on is a billion people getting value out of products that a small minority of people aren't happy with yet propose no alternative to.

and what i see is a billion serf's getting exploited by a small minority of tech feudal lords. There is no alternative, except opting out of the game entirely. That is the point I wish to make here. There is no making a safe social media. Facebook is irredeemable. Social media is destructive to society by design.

Well if we go by your narrative then the world is anyways doomed. Since majority of the planet has no education, interest, or intelligence to understand anything complicated, their votes are not going to vote for solving problems which are important, but irrelevant to them. IMHO, unless your cause is important to the masses, it is doomed. You should probably think how can you help the blissful, ignorant majority to understand your perspective from their point of view to achieve your cause.

I agree -- we are doomed. I have no cause. I stopped believing in democracy a long time ago. I have zero interest in helping others to understand my perspective, best we can hope for is to slow down the tech parasites from harvesting their digital souls.

> I care more about privacy than the 'immense value' that garbage like facebook provides the world

Then you are in the minority. If there was a mass of people like you then someone could build an alternative and you could use it. That mass doesn't exist though. Most people don't see FB as "garbage" and until you recognize that, then you have a minority opinion (totally ok!) just don't expect billion dollar products to cater to your view.

g45y45 · 7 years ago
Of course I am in the minority. The majority of people on this planet have neither the education, interest or intelligence to understand the cage that is being constructed around them. Are you in the blissful, ignorant majority that cannot see what is actually going on here?

Rock climbing is like solving a puzzle with your body. You can't just go straight up. You have to analyze all of the differently shaped holds and walls and figure out how to position your body to maximize your grip while minimizing the amount of energy you need to expend. There's also a difficulty rating system, so you feel rewarded when you manage to finish a new level. But if you're not motivated by leveling or puzzle solving, it's probably not for you.
g45y45 · 7 years ago
I'm motivated by solving real problems, not artificial climbing wall problems, sorry.

I disagree; good DRM is transparent and unnoticeable, and if that is the case then users do not care.

Who does care about DRM is pirates and content creators whose content is shown without them earning off of it.

Yes I am aware of fair use exceptions, but fair use should exempt a user from getting sued over using a fragment of copyrighted content; it does NOT force a content creator from offering their content open for downloading and republishing, even if it's for fair use.

No such thing as good DRM. All DRM is broken by design, and exists to take your rights away. Never make excuses for this garbage software. DRM must die.

some other fun alternatives: mountain biking is amazing and there may bw great places to do it in your town that you arent aware of yet. no cars to run you over and modern bikes let you go anywhere in comfort.

rock climbing in an indoor gym is safe and low impact and programmers often enjoy the mental aspect of it. it incentivizes you strongly to keep weight down as well.

g45y45 · 7 years ago
climbing walls or being stuck in the wilderness with a bike don't sound like fun at all. pointless. I don't think your suggestion is helpful for people that have depression. The metal working suggestion from parent is far more helpful, as you are actually making something.

Good luck getting health care.

Any australian working in the US that is able to obtain PR or citizenship likely has a well paid job that provides health insurance. While I feel for the folks in the US without coverage, lack of access to affordable health care does not really apply to employed, skilled immigrants. In my experience US health care is the best on the planet, its also the most expensive.

From my perspective, US health care is way above the quality of healthcare in Australia. Price, not so much...

Reminder that Facebook also stores(stored?) 3 separate hashes for your password: passwoRd, PASSWOrD, and PasswoRd. They weren't super transparent about this fact.

g45y45 · 7 years ago
You don't need to store 3 hashes, infact, you would need many hashes for all possible cases. It is easier to drop all cases pre hashing, and only store a lower case hashed value.
