fosco commented on Ask HN: What are your thoughts on LLMs and user privacy?    · Posted by u/eniz

I think it’s terrible, I asked one to find a picture I thought was copied to me from somewhere was a quote not knowing it was made by that person.

The LLM uploaded to internet and “found” the exact picture stating it didn’t exist anywhere else, that source is still viewable on the internet despite me immediately submitting a request to remove. It’s not private but I felt like I’d been had.

I've seen so many things disappear off the web that I knee-jerk yt-dlp/wget/DeDRM anything I am interested in or is relevant to my personal culture.

What stinks is I haven't found anything satisfactory in terms of archival software that runs locally. For now, I shove things into folders in external drives, but directory trees are very poor when it comes to categorization and retrieval.

I’m reasonable satisfied with Shiori and its text search functionality

I’ve worked at some very large networks.

In a pinch and when on a call, it’s always Microsoft paint.

I am refitting a 44-foot sailboat, repowering it with an electric motor and lithium batteries; solar panels and a wind generator to come. Lots of practical work with my hands: wiring, plumbing, carpentry, fiberglass, sewing, drilling, sanding, wrenching, tinkering. After decades of complicated software efforts, a majority of which have never gone anywhere, it feels really satisfying to build things that you can see and touch, that stay built once you're done with them, useful in a way you can experience. Someday in the near future we'll set sail and go see more of the world - generating our own power, our own propulsion, our own fresh water; living by the sun and the wind and the waves, embedded in the natural world.
