The further time goes on toward segmented streaming platforms and DRM bullshit, the deeper my piracy hedge grows. Eventually there will be a streaming service aggregation service a la Cable channels and we're back at square 1. Add to that streaming services pushing new ad schemes now that they've captured enough market share for the risk to be worth it, and we've got a great storm brewing for a resurgence in piracy and media execs going "but y?"

BTW modern piracy setups are far more streamlined and easier to manage/use than modern streaming platforms. Assuming you have some tech ability anyway.

A half decent NAS, with Dockerised *rr is the gold standard of torrenting. I never knew it could be so painless.

Android using Linux is what single handily advanced the adoption of Linux among consumers.

fckthisguy · 2 years ago
Adoption on desktop is 100% more related to Steam support, at least in the gaming segment.

Anecdotally, among friends and colleagues, people are only staying with Windows for gaming support.

People generally dislike Windows but are forced to stay their for gaming. As support for Linux improves, they'll be less willing to put up with Windows' BS.

Hey yeah, totally sensible question - wish I had a better answer. Unfortunately there isn't a great way to transfer an ongoing campaign. That's one of the main issues with getting folks to try out new virtual tabletops - there's some pretty established platforms already out there and there's a fair amount of lock in. Especially if you consider the assets a lot of DMs have purchased on those platforms, like you mentioned.

But I'm hoping eventually Diceright will have enough 'killer features' that people will give it a shot anyway. Would be great if you guys would consider it once you finish your current campaign. Thanks!

The VTTES plugin for Firefox/Chrome allows for importing/exporting between OrcPub/DungeonMastersVault, Foundry, and roll20 formats.

Worth checking out if you could support one of those as an import target.

Ok, so it is a clear sign that CD Projekt is going under. You cannot have a labor union and still be a successful company. Unions are cancer.

More to the point: IT job market in Poland is based on freelance (B2B) contracts. The fact that CD Projekt staff can unionize proves that they were mostly employed on Contract of Employment. Which means that all the best stuff have already left CD Projekt long time ago, because no self-respecting programmer would work on Contract of Employment when they can make twice the money as a freelancer.

Hard disagree.

One thing that I find funny is that when I want to adopt a dog I'm screened meanwhile a drug addict or pedophile can have children no questions asked.
fckthisguy · 2 years ago
If the government knows somebody is a danger to children, they can't just have kids. In the UK at least, they'll be taken into state social care.

fckthisguy commented on YouTube using antipattern to force people enable history    · Posted by u/xchip

If you are not logged in to YouTube you get generic crappy recommendations, why not this for someone without history turned on?

I use the YouTube recommender extensively and understand the issues about getting increasing crap in recs. I really have no interest in fake science crap or conspiracy theory crap! So I aggressively "do not like" videos or channels that turn up with this junk. I'm not sure I could use YouTube without the recommender and would not use it if I got constant crap. The "do not like" tells the recommender not to send that particular type of crap and though more crap will inevitably drift in, the result is a pretty useful feature.

That's pretty much what's been happening for the last decade. I turned off search history an age ago and I've had a slightly tailored (based on subscriptions) but mostly generic home page since them.

It's not a cas where they can't. They decide on this course of action.

On a related note, they already show an (almost) totally generic feed for Shorts. If you turn search history off, you see a lot of Andrew Tate, anti-trans, and "masculinity is under attack" messaging. It's disgusting to think that's what Google are showing to new sign users.

fckthisguy commented on Mr. Beast video taken down due to CSS toggle copyright claim   twitter.com/TheJackForge/... · Posted by u/FlamingMoe
fckthisguy · 2 years ago
To be clear, the copyright strike is for a small two second animation in the middle of a much larger video.

The correct course of action here is for Mr Beast to apologize to the animation owner (AO) and to reupload the video with the animation removed. Or, to license the animation.

YouTube should then lift demonization.

AO didn't suffer any damage so there's no compensation owed. Legally, AO might be able to chase this but the payout will likely be far less than the court costs.

Mr Beast seems to be a pretty upstanding guy, so I wouldn't be surprised if he licensed the animation for a generous price.

Ultimately, it was the editor who messed up so the Mr Beast team need to review their processes.

"ruin" ohhh puleaze.

It turns off monetization for one video. Unless you fuck up 3 times, then maybe it "ruins" your channel.

And if it's a fraudulent strike the person who filed the fraudulent strike gets a strike. Meanwhile you can send as many phony C&Ds as you want.

fckthisguy · 2 years ago
Most videos like this make the majority of their money in the first few days. If they get demonetized, they're effectively dead. Considering the huge costs involved, that's pretty bad.
fckthisguy commented on Node.js 20.6.0 will include built-in support for .env files   twitter.com/kom_256/statu... · Posted by u/mariuz

When will React env variables work on docker images without any bullshit hacks? I mean when I have my frontend and backend in separate pods, use nginx to serve the frontend in kubernetes and want use BACKEND_URL as an env. Why is it so goddamn hard. Any high IQ people have tips on how to get this to work without some weird injections before building the image? Me dumb.
fckthisguy · 2 years ago
I'm not 100% sure the problem you're trying to solve, but I've solved a similar sounding one that may be of use to you too.

We needed to set env vars on React applications (the frontend) inside Docker containers. The containers were going to be built in CI/CD, and we didn't want different builds for each environment.

We solved this by adding a small JS script that is included in the base HTML. It pushes env vars into the window object, so they're accessible from window.env.

The JS file is generated by a Bash script that's ran whenever the container starts (by modifying the entry-point.sh file used by Nginx's Docker image).

The Bash script loads enumerates any environment variable with a given prefix.

Docker already allows you to set runtime environment variables from the run command, or via Docker Compose.

Im the end, the developer experience comes down to "docker run image:tag -e PREFIX_FOO=BAR".
