72 hours of supplies would not be nearly enough.

Emergency services get 72 hours grace before they have to feed people. It’s for their benefit in planning responses.

I remember an article on this in the New Scientist a long time ago. It opened with telling us that our grandchildren will be able to identify old photos by the blueness of the sky. SO2 in the sky will reduce the intensity of its colour.

More substantially, the distribution of cooling by latitude from SO2 is different from the distribution of warming from CO2. You can put enough SO2 up there to get the same average cooling as the average warming from the CO2 but either the poles will be warmer and the equator cooler, or vice versa (I forget which way it goes). SO2 is not actually “anti-CO2” at all.

So weather patterns will be quite different in a CO2 + SO2 world, and decisions about the “right” amount of SO2 to pump out will be highly contested

I guess perhaps the better conclusion would be that maybe dosages should be adjusted so that people don’t lose weight too quickly?
explodingman · 9 months ago
In its trials, Ozempic was combined with intervention/guidance from nutritionists and fitness advisors, and doctors are supposed to reproduce this by referring patients. You can't do that with mice.

I think if I were taking Ozempic I would ask my doctor to halve the rate of progression to higher doses to make the whole process easier to manage, not just managing muscle loss but also the whole of life impact. The official protocol is very "crash diet" in style.

Anyone thinking of taking Ozempic should be aware that many people abandon the drug within the first two years, due to too much nausea, diarrhoea and cost.

explodingman commented on Jaywalking legalized in New York City   theguardian.com/us-news/2... · Posted by u/Thomashuet

> And yet jaywalking accounts for the majority of pedestrian deaths, despite being a fraction of the number of crossings.

This is simply false.

While most pedestrian deaths happen on open roadways (with a 3:1 ratio), that isn't the same thing as jay walking. Indeed, most of these fatalities involve people on the side of the road, usually in the dark.

Most pedestrian deaths happen at night. This is when it is easiest to see cars coming and avoid getting hit when crossing, (atleast if the cars have their lights on, which is frequently not the case).

Most pedestrian deaths happen in areas with no sidewalk. If there's no sidewalk, then there isn't going to be a safe option to cross.

Love that word "pleiotropic", nice vocab builder.

So it looks like GLP-1 may have positive side-effects beyond what can be explained as consequences of weight loss. Surprising linkages between biochemistry/hormones and temperament.

I am slowly (1 kilogram per month) losing weight by eating nothing but meat 2-3 days per week. My understanding is that the extra GLP-1 secreted by the gut when digesting lots of protein leads to appetite suppression. It works, and is surprisingly easy to do (no feelings of hunger).

So will I also be getting the beneficial side effects of GLP-1? If so, high-protein dieting becomes the smart way to lose weight.

> “Blood flow restriction exercise has been shown in studies on Earth to give similar muscle, bone and cardiorespiratory training benefits normally seen during higher intensity exercise, at much lower exercise intensities and durations,” Caplan said.

Interesting, where can I learn more about putting this into practice?

I wonder if it is related to 'voodoo flossing tape', which is latex tape that is tightly wound around an injured joint. After exercising the tape is removed and this somehow seems to aid in healing, though it's not clear how it works.

I’ve read of a Japanese body building practice that involves using a blood pressure cuff to restrict the dispersal of blood. The muscle marinates in its metabolic waste, which has an anabolic effect. Don’t know what they do for muscles in the torso.
