exo762 commented on Removing juries: 'A move towards an authoritarian state'   theguardian.com/law/2025/... · Posted by u/binning

Are you implying that removing juries would improve alignment between general populace sense of justice and justice system outcomes? Because that would be an unfathomably bad take.

I came here to ask if there is some way of fixing this. I'm guessing not.

Youtube lately seems particularly bad in terms of showing lots of "shorts" all over when I have zero interest in watching them, but also suggested videos seem somehow aggressively chosen. I'm not sure how to describe that, but that's what it feels like to me.

There is a plugin called Unhook. It allows to remove shorts, recommendation feed, or even set subscriptions as your default page.

So far the biggest weakness of Signal is identification via a phone number. It's not only hackers who can spoof the numbers, but an authoritarian governments too may take ownership of a number at any moment.

Addressing future threats is good, but priorities should be different.

You can set a password in Signal, preventing movement of your account in case of SIM hijacking. Feature is called "Registration lock".

I still don't think all this talk with trump and ukraine represents any meaningful retreat from american influence. It isn't like military bases are closing. Whoever is in power in a given US allied state very much wants to preserve the status quo that saw them seated in the position of power, aligned with the largest and most comprehensive military on the planet.

Empire has an idiot at the helm. As a Pole, I enjoyed pax americana a lot, I regret deeply its decline, and I blame not just MAGA, but both parties. But no matter what is the reason, you guys are not worth the trust anymore. Europe is re-militarizing.

I think signal is already funded by USA taxpayers.

Wikipedia has a ton of money and for a few decades doesn't really need any donations.

Are you speaking about Open Technology Fund? AFAIK they've contributed just 3mil, while Signal costs ~40mil a year.

Retry is also a nice little utility that makes the retry loop easier:

exo762 · 7 months ago
I have this in my .bashrc:

  function retry {
      until $@; do :; done
      alert
  }
  export -f retry
Works reasonably well for non-scripting usecases.

Props for Scarlett for turning down what was likely a big chunk of change. I can see how being the official voice of AI could turn out to be counter productive for her in the longer run

What long run? She is 39 in Hollywood.

I don't. I still neuter Firefox (LibreWolf, mostly.) and disable all the sync nonsense.

Do you consider it to be useless or is it something else? Privacy concerns (it is e2e encrypted btw)?

It's Boeing that can't catch a break.

Starliner? Delays and cancellations.

KC-46? That POS still isn't reliably refueling, and if I understand correctly USAF is rumored to be looking for a replacement.

F-15EX? It can't use conformal fuel tanks the F-15E has been using for almost 40 bloody years. No, that means it can't achieve its major selling point of carrying 22 missiles either.

737 MAX? Clearly maximum kek given this and that whole comedy about safety exemptions yesterday.

I want to like Boeing, but I feel it's justifiable to tell them to go fuck themselves at this point.

EDIT: I also forgot that V-22 Osprey that crashed into the sea off Japan back in November, killing all on board. As far as I'm aware, that led to a complete grounding of all Ospreys by all US military branches and also the JSDF pending investigation findings.

23andMe should be destroyed, including all copies of its database. I hope EU will fry them.
