This is very cool!

Sidetrack: the website mentions "driving espresso innovation forwards". Is this a thing? I love coffee but mostly just use a french press or a moka pot (which are more "great old school tech" than "innovation")

Oh, yes. Look up the Decent DE1 to see what that means.

I will drink moka-pot coffee if that's all that's available, but espresso is what I want to have most days. So I have a good enough grinder and an mid-range espresso machine. It isn't always a success. Sometimes it's sour, sometimes bitter, sometimes too weak. Most of the time I don't have a clue why, so I can't address anything in particular, I can only try changing one of the few variables I can control with my setup, and hope to god that the other ones haven't changed on their own.

People are really serious about consistently producing real good espresso. Control and observability are what these machines offer.

If you want to fall into the rabbit hole Lance Hendrick's YouTube goes in depth into recent research and technique. And James Hoffman is a similar but more approachable source.

Here's my opposing view: I love Passkeys.

I use Firefox as my browser and 1Password as my password manager. On my iPhone, I use 1Password + Firefox.

I look at https://passkeys.directory/ every so often and switch my logins from passwords to passkeys. This has included a lot of my common logins like GitHub, Google, and Microsoft.

There is a lot of confusing terminology. For some reason sites will say "login with Touch ID" or "login with Windows Hello" instead of "login with Passkey".

Aside from that quirk, I love it. 1Password syncs my passkeys between devices. I can use them both on my laptop and my phone. It would be inconvenient if I needed to login to a shared computer e.g. at a library or friend's house, but I don't do that often enough to care (though of course some people do, which is totally valid).

Honest question, not a critique: what's the point of passkeys if you already use 1password? It unlocks with touch ID both on computers and phones, it autofills and autogenerates username and password. Plus you've got the option to fall back to manual input if you don't have 1password available in a particular device, and credential sharing (outside of 1p) becomes feasible. What's better about passkeys with 1p?

Have we become stupider or is it just the ease with which we can throw out this vitriol?

The second, plus higher amplification of untrustworthy sources due to bad incentives.

Be grateful that they don't print tongues or taste buds in your ass lol
eudes_ochoa · 4 years ago
You'll be disappointed to learn that we, in fact, do have taste buds everywhere inside our bodies, including the gut, lungs and bladder. Not clear whether there are any in the ass per se, but having experienced no.2 after eating very spicy food, I wouldn't be surprised.

Is this built as a Gnome Shell Extension? Would love to be able to just pop this into my shell on OpenSuse without having to change to an Ubuntu based distribution.

Also, what are they going to do once nobody is supporting Gnome 3.38 anymore, porting this to Gnome 40+ seems like it's going to be a pain in the ass. Hopefully it doesn't necessitate a Gnome Shell fork...

I don't know if the thing they're announcing here is just an extension, but the features mentioned in the article all come included in the pop shell gnome extension.

I've run a 3d printer with the extrusion rate way down before (to try and produce very thin surfaces), and the results were far less consistent. I got big holes in my parts and massive dribbles and blobs in other places.

I wonder how these results can be so so so much better in comparison?

I hacked a silly sequencer for it some time ago. You can give it a try by following the instructions here:
