egor2820 commented on Ask HN: Is Java in Decline?    · Posted by u/neverminder

Yes, I see no new interesting projects for years started in Java. I've been working with Java for a long time. At first it outperformed C++ in ease of development. Large enterprises created software of humongous complexity with that but Docker emerged and Java fell out of favour as it's startup slow and it couldn't never fullfill low-latency needs with its GC magic. And eventually, it fell in a trap of any long-living tech - it became complex, with snobbish communities, no easy way to adapt to new realities, though it tries but it fails: failed to integrate itself with browsers, failed with computing graphics, failed with scientific libraries, low-latency servers and now it starts to lose ground in general computing. The only argument in its defense is that it's widespread - well, yes, but it's a miserable argument for a prefessional.

Interstingly, why cloud solutions don't adopt Sql/med standard (ie risingwave, snowflake), they all have their specific sql syntax for that, as well as inroducing addional 'connector' and 'source' terms, not sure if sql/med have that (as i cannot read standard right away as it's not free).

The problem is to become popular enough so scraped data become a sufficient represenation of all users. The app needs to be useful. At this point why ruin your reputation instead you can continue to gain new users.

I wonder will it cost less to produce and maintain than to train and maintain a soldier. How fast and accurate is it at dispatching multiple targets , possibly moving , compared to a human sniper .

AD: It's worth pointing out that Harvard Business School just published a report[1] on what they deem as 'Hidden Workers' - one of the major factors in these workers remaining hidden is that their CV or digital profiles can't get past the AI filtering engines almost all ATS system use... We've side stepped AI filtering systems with peer-to-peer collateralised endorsements, humans are doing the match-making and at scale.

But AI can weigh connections too, if reqruiters use outdated AI systems doesn't mean AI cannot solve the current problem.

I'm kind of out of the loop, but I expect that if I cannot get Windows 11 then eventually my Windows 10 machines would no longer be supported with updates and so on, right? I guess I will check if I can play my games and do my work using Linux... I feel confident that I should be able to.

"I see construction workers wasting time putting on hard hats when I haven't once seen something fall on their heads. When will they grow up?"

"I see electricians making sure they're properly grounded before working on high voltage electrical equipment rather than just making sure they don't touch the dangerous parts while they're working. When will they grow up?"

"I see pilots going through the same checklist they went through the last time they flew the plane even though they never find anything wrong. When will they grow up?"

"I see lifeguards wearing buoys on their feet rather than just swimming right to begin with. When will they grow up?"

Programming suffers from a lack of attention to quality not a lack of awareness that we "solve business problems".

Electricity, building houses is based on hard science, code quality is base on opinion
egor2820 commented on Tell HN: I love programming but am sick of the software industry    · Posted by u/overitthrowaway

Programming, at least what is called programming when we like to do it solo without constraints, and corporate software engineering (what we do for payment) are completely different things. I like programming actually and corporate programming is necessary evil for money which somewhat distantly resembles what you like. If you separate those things you won't have a confusion. Corporate software engineering is somewhat boring and frustrating indeed, it's still better ratio of boredom/comfort/payment than any other speciality for me and my skills.

About misconceptions in community, indeed there are a lot, and they are too deep to overturn it singlehandedly in a reasonable time, they are established by a ton of smart/intelligent people and learned like a dogma by other normals. There's no hard proof of those patterns, paradigms so it's some kind of religious belief you'd better not argue with or will be burned at the stake. Be happy it's only a metaphor.
