I once wondered what happens when you take x away from x squared, and let that equal 1.

I sat down and worked it out. What do you know golden ratio.

Oh and this other number, -0.618. Anyone know what it's good for?

0.618 is used as level for trading with fibonacci retracements: https://centerpointsecurities.com/fibonacci-retracements/

I was wondering how these kind of scenes were done in the movie Enter The Void back in 2009. Maybe they used different technique but looks very similar: https://vimeo.com/60239415
e9 commented on Ask HN: Is it still worth pursuing a software startup?    · Posted by u/newbebee

It’s the best time to start a company. Few people can build anything now. Big companies are at a huge disadvantage now because they can’t be personal. Software development is going decentralized. You can go to a bunch of businesses and be personal, and develop personalized solutions for them in person. You only need few such clients to be profitable and have lifestyle business.

It's what I think too, BUT curiously is not the case for China. Imagine if the DeepSeek breakthroughs were patented and closed instead of published in the open. And here we are, and they're not patented and not built on patented technology.
e9 · 6 months ago
Probably because DeepSeek creators were afraid government would just come and take it from them. The only solution was to open source it which is kind of a big middle finger to the Chinese government.

When I was at Malwarebytes we had concerns that IOBit was stealing our database and passing it off on their own. While we had a lot of obvious proof, we felt it wasn't enough for the average person to understand.

To get real proof we created a new program that only existed on a single machine, and then added a signature for that application. This way there could be no claim that they independently added something to their database, as the program was not malware and literally impossible to actually find in the wild. Once they added it to their database we made a blog post and the issue got a lot of attention.

I was learning OS stuff and made a toy virus for myself back in 1999 and I thought it would be cool if antivirus officially recognized it so I sent a copy to antivirus company(Dr.Web. I think it was called?) and to my surprise now all antivirus databases have it and someone even has gif recording of machine booting up with it… so clearly they must be sharing not just db but also the executables etc

I've written software that has had a big impact, on a lot of lives. I'm still doing it.

I haven't been paid a dime for it, and I'm quite happy with that.

I don't think PG, or any VCs would be at all interested in my work. They might like the work, itself, but it's not gonna make anyone rich.

Can you please share some more about what you’ve done.

e9 commented on Ask HN: What Will Replace ETL?    · Posted by u/rawgabbit
e9 · 2 years ago
I think the dumbest thing in a lot of ETL is the API: - company collects data in database then creates API on top of - another company uses this API to put stuff into their own database waste of everyone's time, just share the relevant database or relevant dump in some way this will make everyone's life easier, this of course doesn't work for dynamic data

For sure. In indigenous circles, the perception is often that science’s approach to psychedelics is quite ill-fitted because it seeks to separate the molecules from the non-physical essence of the medicines. What is called “set and setting” in the secular world, is called “sorcery” or “ceremony” for them. They understand the many transcendental layers opened by this medicine in a profound, intimate manner, and many of these traditions have developed, refined and passed down over generations intricate spiritual sciences meant to work with these unseen forces with the most grace possible.

So, naturally when westerns come and want to isolate compounds and get rid of the ceremonial background because it’s “unscientific”, the only possible reaction is to put one’s hand in the face and think “here we go again, THIS too will be colonized.”

This world has far many more dimensions than what modern science is able to address. And many of these plants/compounds open access to these dimensions. It’s really important I think that we have the humility to learn from the people who have worked with these medicines for a very long time.

Context: I have apprenticed and studied very closely under various traditional lineages for the past few years.
