Seems rather myopic to me.

We already share critical intelligence with the Five Eyes countries; why not share medication safety/efficacy information with them too?

There is the famous example of Thaladomide, which was approved by the regulators in the Germany and caused a disaster in birth defects:

US FDA however was skeptical of the safety of the drug and never approved it for sale in US.

Overlooking complaints of lack of backlighting, the Panic Playdate's screen IMHO is its stand out feature.

It's a "Sharp Memory LCD" which has the appearance of e-ink and shares it's ability to continue to display an image when unpowered, but has the active refresh rate of a more standard LCD.

It's frankly stunning to see in real life, and it's hard to describe how crisp it looks. Videos do not do it justice. It's truly unlike any other display I have seen.

I would absolutely adore a kindle sized e-reader with the technology, and am hopeful the future brings one.

The Daylight tablet is the closest to Playdate display among the tablets listed in the article.

Sometimes I would like to have a small laptop with black and white screen or maybe 8 bit color that would have extreme (measured in days) or almost unlimited battery power (solar cell?). Something that would have a C compiler for happy hacking, though I would like to have a Linux kernel on it. I am not sure about connectivity though.

We made huge efficiency and battery chemistry gains, but software is lacking. Though it would be probably a quite expensive device that only a few want.

Check out this Android tablet, which would support running gcc through Termux I think.

But why the hate for blue light? When you look at this on the manufacturer's web page they advertise that like preference wouldn't be nice. ”100% amber”, "blue free!”, gross! I won't be doing that for any reason.

If someone else wants amber, fine but why not an option?

e-_pusher · a year ago
The device does have white LEDs too. So you can adjust the color temperature. It is just that most of the marketing materials are done to highlight the amber display feature.

The brownout prevention hack you mentioned in the pcb design page is really neat!

Pre-ordered! I noticed in the marketing photos that there was a keyboard, but it's not included in the pre-order bundle. Is there a recommended keyboard for the Daylight that's wireless?

Any Bluetooth keyboard will work.

I wish it had page turn buttons.

I bought an Oasis entirely because of the buttons. Once again Amazon has killed their only reader with buttons.

They clearly don’t care much about Kindles in general, they’ve had software issues like missing features forever that Amazon doesn’t care about fixing.

This lacks ghosting, the screen and CPU are fast enough not to be obnoxious when doing literally anything (low bar, but Kindle). It’s USB-C, and since it runs Android apps it runs the Kindle app.

But no page turn buttons. I get those don’t matter for a normal tablet, but to me their do for an e-reader. I guess it’s just as well, they probably wouldn’t work in the Kindle app anyway.

The tablet does have page turn buttons! There is a side button and a top button. The side button in particular is nice as a page turn button.

Really compelling product. Is the light temperature adjustable?
e-_pusher · a year ago
Source: I was the chief hw engineer for this product.

Yes - the backlight temperature allows you to adjust it from a pure (albeit on the warmer side) white to pure amber.

So this is a trans-reflective LCD screen?

Does it invert the colors when backlit?

It's about 50% heavier than rM2; the battery is almost triple the capacity of rM2; I assume these are related and both due to the use of LCD over eInk?

How many shades of gray?

e-_pusher · a year ago
Source: I was the chief hw engineer for this device.

The colors do not invert when the backlight is on, which is great because you can turn on only a slight amount of backlight if you need it, and have it blend to the ambient lighting.

It supports 256 levels of grayscale.

Looks nice! I think I'd only get it if I could use it as a monitor though. Displaying more than grayscale colors would be a plus too. Still glad to see it though.

You can use an app called Duet Display on it. It works quite well (can’t remember the exact ms latency now)
