Chiming in here with a bit of data on the hiring side of things. I'm the cofounder of SharpestMinds, an ISA-powered mentorship marketplace for data scientists. For all the obvious reasons, we track the hiring rates for our grads very closely and have been keeping close tabs on the pandemic's effects on the tech job market.

Our observations so far:

1. Hiring in tech has definitely not gone to zero, even for the junior-level roles we skew towards.

2. We're seeing more like a 60-70% drop in hires compared to our original (pre-COVID) projections for the month of March, so far.

3. Companies least affected seem to fall in two major categories: A) BigCos with deep pockets; and B) SaaS businesses with predictable revenue streams and some degree of economic insulation from the "meatspace" economy.

Many software businesses (e.g., Zapier, GitLab) are already run partly or fully remotely, so their hiring workflows can take quarantine in stride, to an extent. Many others (e.g., Stripe) are quickly adapting to these new constraints.

The effects of a global quarantine and pandemic are almost certain to propagate to all companies eventually. But some are less affected than others, economically and operationally. We're fortunate in tech that it's still quite possible - albeit measurably harder - to get hired under current conditions.

60-70% drop meaning if it was 100 roles last month it's 30-40 this month?

Considering that it was an email service, focused on making async communication better, one would think right now might be a pretty good time when a large number of people are working from home.

strategically perhaps, but the optics on that are so awful. I'd argue it's the wrong thing to do if you thought you'd be more profitable in a crisis.

Without knowing much about the team I really doubt this has much to do with remote work. It seems like a smart move to take pressure off team deliverables in general right now for a host of reasons.

> We're using Notion as a team wiki and note taking app. It's ... okay. I mean, it's probably the best tool for the job, and it's great in some ways, but it's severely limited in others.

Has anyone had experience using Org Mode files in a Git repo to achieve the same effect as Notion or a team wiki? Seems like it checks many of the same boxes (forgive the pun): todo lists, easy links, hierarchy, tables, Kanban (with org-kanban), formatting. I think that it would address the issues, too: ‘show me what changed’ would just be git diff, comments could live in comment blocks, todo lists and reminders are rather insanely powerful & flexible, and it’s very extensible and, of course, free software.

git works well for coordinating important changes in a codebase but it's awful for quick ad-hoc changes like these most of these tasks

And Expensify is even worse for the administrators. One of the worst admin experiences in SaaS.

I've never used it, is it worse than concur?

I'd actually prefer less whiteboarding to people spending a bit more of their own time on their ideas. Think about it and research it for a few days before calling a meeting.
dickeytk · 5 years ago
Yeah I can think of several times when I or someone else came prepared to a remote meeting with a PowerPoint. Of course that took more work, but the product would often be reused and shared long after the meeting. Not only that, a higher quality work conveys the idea much better.

Whiteboards are absolutely indispensable for communicating ideas quickly in a small group of people. It's effectively just a bigger (and easier to erase) version of grabbing a scrap of paper to scribble something down when explaining or describing something to someone else.

I'm honestly more surprised that this isn't a universally known concept on HN. Scribbling on scraps of paper is something most people in western countries have done since pre-school.

Indispensable for who? Perhaps designers? As an engineer I spent 5 years working remote and this has never been an issue. We just never needed—or even considered—drawing things.

Even now that I’m not remote all we use the whiteboard for is bulleted lists which easily can be done with notion or google docs

On the plus side, they did get a bunch of funding recently so hopefully they'll be able to devote some resources to it. They definitely seem like an organization that is pretty devoted to quality products.
