defenestration commented on Three questions to turn the table during technical interviews   bellmar.medium.com/three-... · Posted by u/mbellotti

For somebody who's unemployed, especially somebody who's been unemployed a while (very common in this market), the main thing you care about is getting employed again.

I imagine somebody who's currently employed wants to know that the company is better than the place they're currently at before they'd accept an offer. But sometimes "better" can be a very low bar to clear because their current company might be awful.

In other words, evaluating the candidate by their questions is just bias towards those who are already in good situations. Somebody being unemployed or employed in a toxic environment doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them especially in an economy where companies continue to lay people off at random.

Yes, your current situation does make a difference in what is important to you and which questions you have. And it also influences the balance at the interviewing table. I can imagine that it is frustrating to feel being evaluated against candidates who have the luxery of saying ‘no’ to a new job and can think critically if they want to work at the new place. Sometimes you have more freedom to say ‘no’ then you think. It can make a difference between night and day.

Now to the problem with YouTube, and I'm sick and tired of reporting this, because by now they should have an automated solution for this, look at this link:

https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/im1

Channels named "SpaceX [LIVE]" [0], "SpaceX" (which is actually @uyenmusic with 148.000 subscribers), and so on.

Most of these channels have no videos except for that single live stream, occasionally inserting QR-codes with crypto-scams. Like the first one I mentioned.

> Huge crypto-giveaway during to the launch!

> During this unique event, you have the opportunity to take a share of 1.000 BTC & 10.000 ETH & 100.000.000 DOGE & 10.000.000 USDT. Have a look at the rules and don't miss out on this. You can only participate once!

And the most interesting thing about this video is that they are using AI to make Elon Musk say that you should scan the QR-code and that you will get the crypto. 100% sounds like him.

That livestream [0] looks like a pretty convincing scam to me, with 22k people viewing at the moment. And it indeed sounds like him. The real username is hidden behind the visible SpaceX[Live] name.

By hours, flying is substantially safer than car or foot, on par with trains. By quantity of trips, substantially less safe than walking.

Thanks for the stats! Interestingly traveling by space shuttle comes down to 70.000 deaths per 1 billion hours traveled, compared 30.8 deaths per 1 billion hours flown.

It is irrational.

Since November 2001, there has been one death aboard a major airline operating in the U.S.[1]. That was a Southwest flight where an entire engine self-destructed. It was an issue with the CFM engine, Not with anything Boeing did.

You might choose to include one more. An Asiana flight tumbled end over end after arriving short at SFO. Everyone survived the crash, but a passenger was killed when an emergency responder hit them with a vehicle, unable to see them due to firefighting foam.[2] The accident was again not caused by anything related to Boeing.

You are safer aboard any aircraft operated by a major American airline than you are on any other form of transportation. Including walking.

For distance traveled flying is safer than any other form of transportation (maybe except trains?). I wonder however, what the stats are for time spent. How much safer is time spent flying, compared to other forms of transportation? Is it about equal, a bit safer or an order of magnitude safer?

Sadly common nowadays.

Lately I’ve really got into my self-hosting again.

I had moved away from it as my income increased and I valued convenience and less things to worry about, but with everything becoming subscription based, with regular price hikes, I’m hosting as much as I can myself.

I’ve also stated to torrent a lot more content, my rule of thumb is if you make it available for me to buy, I’ll buy it, but if you expect me to wait 18 months for something released in the US to land in the UK then I’ll just torrent it.

Just out of curiosity, what are the things that you’re self-hosting? And what’s your setup for self-hosting?

If we understand the mechanisms of aging, perhaps we can reduce the health effects of aging. This might be an easier target than increasing overall life expectancy. Thus reducing the impact on society of caring for seniors.

As I understand it, the metabolic rate in most people is pretty good and constant until about 60 and starts to drop off. I would be happy with a treatment that provides good strong health from 60 to 100 and then a sudden death. I don’t want to be infirm/disabled by age, not able to enjoy life and be a burden to my family.

There is a social issue around death that is quite complex. A wish for a sudden peaceful death at a certain old age is not an easy one. Family, doctors, society and laws should be aligned on this. Right now the norm (at least in the Netherlands) is too keep a person alive as long as reasonably possible.
