Fair enough. How much RAM though?
decryption · 9 days ago
16GB would be plenty. I've got like a dozen services running on an 8GB i7-4970 and it's only using 5GB of RAM right now.

I'm surprised it's only 65%. There's hardly anywhere to fuel these things up and the price of hydrogen isn't exactly a bargain.

That explains the cheap DDR4 DIMMs on AliExpress. Can get 2x 16GB DDR4-3200 DIMMs for A$252 delivered to Australia. A local PC store has same spec “name brand” RAM for around $380-$400.

How do you fellow HN'ers separate their online with their corporate identity and day job?

I cannot rid myself of the suspicion that your average boss is going to have a prying eye on your online activities and may even use them against you one way or another e.g. if you offer services/work on side projects that may in any way may compete w/ your employer.

Anyone got experience to share in that regard?

Thinking about this famous precedent: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27424195#27425041

My experience is that bosses read my blog, then when they or a fellow manager need to hire someone, have reached out to me asking me to apply. So it cuts both ways - maybe your shitty boss sees you blogging and sharing your experience, but a good boss will see that and go "I want this passionate and curious person to work for me".

I thought Volvo was publicly traded. Had to look it up.

Volvo Group - sells trucks - publicly traded - Swedish

Volvo Cars - sells cars - not publicly traded - 100% owned by Geely (Chinese)

Volvo Cars ≠ Volvo Group

decryption · 3 months ago
Volvo Cars is still publicly traded. Ticker symbol is VOLCAR B on the Swedish NASDAQ: https://au.finance.yahoo.com/quote/VOLCAR-B.ST/

Geely owns around 79% of the shares, with the rest split up between pension funds and private equity.

I have been stung by the exact same socket name bullshit from Intel and it is infuriating.

I keep wondering why they are not doing a "pro" edition of macOS. Especially focused on creatives vs developers. Already the case with hardware.

This is what I am hoping Apple does with iOS and the Mac. iOS becomes the mainstream operating sytem and Mac is the "pro" operating system.

Now imagine Apple put the same amount of effort and resources into a Proton-like layer for macOS.

The M-series hardware is perfectly fine for most games, overpowered even. What is lacking are the actual games. Very few companies bother with Metal ports of games.

Build a compatibility layer so we can just install any Windows game from Steam and start playing.

Apple did! The Game Porting Toolkit does (I think) what you're talking about and what Steam did for Linux.

https://developer.apple.com/games/game-porting-toolkit/

Why it hasn't taken off, I have no idea.
