This comment is randomly bashing Apple for not acting ecologically while suggesting that alternatives are somehow better. Apple can and should be criticized for shitty environmental behavior when you can actually back up your claim.

Not that there would be any proof in the comment, no. For example, how do Lenovo, Samsung or Dell handle this stuff and can you explain why their approaches produce less waste? Of course not, but let's put some hate into the HN comment section!

A centrally managed maintenance process where Apple hardware is managed and its waste properly disposed off (recycling, proper sorting of waste, secure handling of toxic materials...) vs. risks like customers putting Li-Ion batteries into their home trash causing landfill fires. And throw the left-over SSDs and RAM right into the mix as well.

No, it's just about hating on Apple without any evidence or data to back it up. Mimimi Apple ecologically bad but I won't tell you why or how others are evidently making it better!

If Microsoft can do it, Apple could do it too and even improve upon it.

Also I can't see why the original comment is about "hating on Apple". All I see is legitimate criticism about some issues with Apple products, that apparently many other people have too. Your comment on the other side is very emotional and full of snide remarks.

Surprised she did not mention MagSafe. This is, IMO, the single biggest unforced error Apple has made in a decade filled with them.
cseelus · 6 years ago
Yes, this is really my biggest issue with the new MacBooks or rather was my biggest issue, until I found out there are numerous magnetic connectors and complete cables for USB-C[1].

Now that I use such a cable (L shape, like MagSafe 1), I find it better than the T shaped MagSafe 2 cables, which would disconnect/fall off all the time from my 2015 MBP.

I think most chart libraries use SVG. There are trade-offs between the two approaches and both have their advantages. One of the places that canvas really shines is performance. In the past I've found Chart.js and some of the faster SVG libraries to be about on par with each other, but the upcoming Chart.js 2.9.0 release has had a couple major performance improvements that I think will make it significantly faster than probably any SVG library. It's an area we'll continue to work on since it's one of the main reasons to choose a canvas implementation over an SVG implementation.

I think the other advantage SVG has can be is if you want to do some advanced interactivity. That can sometimes be easier in SVG.

Thank you for your work on Chart.js. I used it exclusively for a couple of years and still think its great.

I'm quite sad they have removed 3D Touch from the phones. A minor feature I really enjoy with quick peeking — and bummed to lose that touch information for apps like Procreate Pocket and other drawing tools.

Is this confirmed yet? Would be sad indeed.

Why do folks that don‘t want to use them even care?

It’s not that when they are used, different code is produced. As with the editors color scheme, it’s just a personal choice everyone can live out within the privacy of his or her editor.

Personally I find it nice to represent single logical tokens like => or === with just a single character.

Inkjets still have a few advantages or are at least on par with Laser printers:

- Borderless printing (Photos, your invoices with a footer that has a blue background, …)

- Much cheaper to restock with 3rd party cartridges or even cheaper when you have one with refillable tanks

- You can print on photo paper and get out really nice looking photos. Generally the quality of images with a good Inkjet is better than laser imho

- You can print on a very broad array of different kinds of papers, formats and materials, many printers can even print on blu-ray discs and stuff like that

- Many modern Inkets use Ink that is water resistant, so you can use a marker pen on your printouts for example

- Time to first page is usually shorter (no warmup needed)

- No risk of Ozone hazards (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_printing#Ozone_hazards)

- Usually smaller form-factor

Dumb question maybe but why is Bootstrap (from Twitter) not on this list? What are the inclusion criteria?

I’m usually the last person to say this. But someone should definitely get fired over the 3 year keyboard fiasco. After the problems they had when they were first introduced in the 12” MacBook, someone should have said its time to switch directions.
cseelus · 7 years ago
That would be Dan Riccio, wouldn‘t it? He is senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, directly answering to Tim Cook and leading the Mac, iPhone, iPad and iPod engineering teams.

Some of the current/recent failures that come to mind:

- The MacBook keyboard issues discussed here

- The MacPro disaster (thermal design issues -> no real update since almost six years)

- The The MBP 2018 thermal design issues

- The MBP „Flexgate“ (display connector design flaw)

- The AirPower debacle

- The iPad Pro 3rd gen. „Bendgate“

As strange as this may sound, this technique isn‘t uncommon at all. Many XBox owners used this as a last resort to fix the infamous Red Ring of Death.

Can anyone with a bit more information explain why the EU might have any saying as to what a San Francisco–based nonprofit digital library can and can not host?
