OT: can anybody recommend a book for a gifted kid (mathematics)? He knows prime numbers, square roots, exponents and can read. Isn't even in school yet (5 years old).

i really enjoyed this book as a kid, it approaches math from a less formal and more fun puzzle-based approach: https://www.amazon.com/Big-Book-Brain-Games-Mathematics/dp/0...
cpsempek commented on Why Is Light So Fast?   profmattstrassler.com/202... · Posted by u/paulpauper

The speed of light is not fast. It's really, really slow! That is, slow relative to the size of the universe and the timespan of the universe, relative to human scales of size and timespan.

Humans can travel around the world (our domain) in a matter of hours (on rockets, our fastest mode of travel thus far). Similarly, the fastest waves can cross the ocean in a matter of hours. Light, on the other hand, takes billions of years to cross the visible universe. It's downright glacial at those scales!

cpsempek · a year ago
on first glance it seems like an interesting take, but then you realize (as someone else already pointed out) that the fastest thing in the universe is not fast, and therefore nothing is fast? a little more thought should make you realize this is a poorly formed take. Also, worth repeating, please read the article before posting. It may be that your insight or critique is present and discussed in the article already.
cpsempek commented on Is Tableau Dead?   mergeyourdata.com/blog/is... · Posted by u/dsaavy

I hate Tableau with a passion. The main bugbear is that viewers can't see the SQL code the dashboards execute. I am no fan of Looker, but the "Explore here" allows other users to see the SQL and tweak it if needed. Most intermediate data stakeholders are confident enough to modify the where clause to suit their custom needs, allowing them to self-serve.

The licensing costs are prohibitive, too. It is almost unaffordable to share Tableau dashboards with your customers and, instead, have to send them static PDFs of your dashboard.

Beyond that, the Tableau infrastructure feels like something from the last century. Data is cached on the server using data extracts rather than following a more modern caching infrastructure.

I also hate Tableau for this reason. However, it's a bad pattern to be storing custom SQL in a BI tool IMO. Better to create tables or views which hold your report logic and are stored in git. That way you're decoupling defining metrics and business logic from your BI tool, making that information queryable in your warehouse by users or other tools (and easily viewable!).

I'm designing an app right now with this pattern and I'd love to get it "right".

We've got a video playing and an icon button which controls whether the video is muted. We've got a "playing speaker" and a "muted speaker" icon.

What's the correct pattern? Should the icon reflect the current state, or the expected state after pressing the button?

current state - this easily generalizes to settings with multiple options.

You have to be a bit careful when picking a brand. All of the stores mentioned here (Walmart, Trader Joes and Whole Foods) carry museli that is loaded with sugar, which it shouldn’t contain.

They generally also carry have options that aren’t just crunchy candy, but be prepared to read a lot of nutrition labels before you find one.

cpsempek · 2 years ago
Weird, not my experience. The Trader Joes version has no added sugars (see here https://traderjoesrants.com/2021/09/19/trader-joes-muesli-ce...) and the Whole Foods brand I see is Bob's Red Mill Muesli which also contains no added sugars (https://www.bobsredmill.com/old-country-style-muesli.html).

I do not understand "breakfast" at all. When I wake up usually the last thing I want to do is start eating, but if I were hungry I'd want something salty and savory and high in protein, steak or a roast, fish, pork ribs, something like this.

The amount of sugar in basically all breakfast foods is just insane, then people actually pour even more sugar on top. I don't understand how people can eat this type of food to begin with, but especially first thing in the morning.

cpsempek · 2 years ago
Most of my mornings involve runs, anywhere from 8-20 mi. I need breakfast, generally oats, fruit and peanut butter.

I make Müsli in America where it effectively does not exist

Muesli formula: 4 cups grains + 1 1/2 cups nuts/seeds + 1/2 cup dried fruit

Grains: Rolled oats, wheat bran, whole rye, whole barley, sorghum flakes, quinoa flakes, millet puffs, millet flakes.

Nuts/seeds: Sliced almonds, walnuts, cashews, pecans, pistachios, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, pepitas, chia seeds, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, unsweetened coconut flakes.

Dried fruit: Dried apricots, dried cherries, dried figs, raisins, golden raisins, currants, apple chips.

Yum. Interesting, wonder where you are that there is no muesli? I'm in CA and can get muesli at my local Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.

I don't see that deja vu poses a problem. Deja vu is simply a feeling of familiarity associated to an experience. It doesn't involve actually having an experience more than once.
cpsempek · 3 years ago
Possibly - but I could just claim that for me déja vu is exactly when two experiences are not differentiable from one another. And if someone claims to have experienced this moment before, identically, how would I refute their claim. It's their experience after all.

How does déja vu, that is the re-experiencing an experience, fit into this theory? It appears that the Information axioms fails to be Essential when one considers déja vu.

Smartphones and social media are tools.

Drugs are tools.

Both can be used or abused.

cpsempek · 3 years ago
Who are the trained professionals prescribing and dosing out smartphones and social media? Like, I get your analogy, but they are so dissimilar in practice that it just ends up reading naive.
