My dad is 85 and this article hits hard about what he fights going on in his body. What sucks is how much of a downward, self reinforcing spiral it all is. It's so hard to see the curbs to walk over or how to get to a thing himself, so he just naturally chooses to do fewer and fewer things. Watching TV is safer and kinder and becomes the default to anything. Which just makes his brain less and less stimulated and active, and you can imagine the drag that adds to keep figuring out life.

But like the empathy found in this article, it's caused me to be incredibly more patient with anyone struggling to walk in front of me on a crowded or narrow sidewalk.

Aging is rough. Thank you to everyone working on accessibility and aging related tech and science.

My grandma is 83 and I could’ve written this exact same post.

I know it comes for everyone, but the pace of said spiral is frightening.

Wish we were in a timeframe with more alternatives for rapid loss of mobility and muscle.

Very impressive! How many jobs do you estimate this could displace?

I used to work for an assistive tech company that did part of this. For people who have degenerative diseases like ALS, we would create speech profiles for them before they lost their voice so that once they did, their computer-generated voice (through eye tracking software and hardware) would be their own and not a generic voice.

What company if you don't mind? Sounds like work I've been interested in. Thanks!

Thanks for this. I have an impending move to Chicago and really haven't connected with the place the 6 or so times I've been the last year.

Maybe some history will help.

Maybe the current designers and product planners will peruse this and get inspired to make a decent looking car again*

costcopizza commented on The subtle art of designing physical controls for cars   theturnsignalblog.com/the... · Posted by u/vsdlrd

One overlooked feature of physical controls is that they also give interiors an identity and experience.

Growing up obsessed with cars, I loved seeing how different brands would lay out the cabin. Volvos from the 2000s used a rather large diagram of a seated person to select the HVAC vent for example.

Also, in my brain, a 3000+ pound object just dang requires some stuff to physically press, push, and hear click!

A couple giant touchscreens with touch controls nearly eliminates that.

Need one for cats.

We can get them to 30 with the help of Jake Perry's protocol.

-A breakfast of eggs, turkey bacon, broccoli and coffee … with cream

-A splash of red wine to “circulate the arteries”

-Stimulation by way of nature documentaries screened in his garage-turned-theater

-Lots of love and attention

Every dollar of profit an insurance company makes is an unnecessary cost. It should be returned to the customers because it means they were over charged. That’s the biggest opportunity for cost savings
costcopizza · 8 months ago
I wonder why this is getting downvoted as I've had this exact same thought.

A most efficient insurance program would be a closed loop.

Any leftover money not spent on care would be used to reduce premiums the following year and/or be saved for higher claim years.

I wonder how that could exist in the US? Perhaps these health sharing ministries are as close as we'll get: https://www.medishare.com/

What a lovely read and solution.

My sister has a disability making independent living a challenge. Although I have 0 technical background, I need to start thinking and brainstorming in this manner.

In my 50k population town in Minnesota, I notice a lot of headlights, taillights, and turn signals are out. Our roads (outside of the Twin Cities) are often bumpy which causes vibration in the vehicles, leading to many bulbs failing.

I drive a 21 year old Saab, and in my 2 years of owning it, I have replaced every single bulb in the exterior of the vehicle except a turn signal or two.

I decided to create a mobile service for vehicle lights. It's a simple website that even technologically-disadvantaged people can use. The website is nearly finished and I will likely come back here to write a post on it for how the website works.

Oh the best part, I get texted and emailed for each service order that comes in, and using my service is only $10 more than what it would cost you to go buy a bulb yourself at OReillys, AutoZone, etc.

I programmed everything myself and developed the idea as well. This is my first real-world project/solution I am bringing into this world that has been verified by others, to be a needed service. Pretty excited about it and I love changing bulbs or replacing light housings, it's fun and simple.

**Update: I perform the install.

costcopizza · 10 months ago
Neat! Do you pick up the bulbs as needed from an auto parts store? Or do you keep a supply on hand?

I think you want to keep this as simple as possible, but I see headlight restoration (which can be done in 30min) and wiper blade replacement complementing this nicely.
