There's also a bug atm where it'll reject your password on iOS if you have a hardware key attached to your account. Won't tell you that's the issue, it'll just make you think you're typing in your credentials wrong. Spent the better part of an afternoon on that with support.

Never noticed any issues with snap, but truth be told I seldom use it for installing anything. If someone is unhappy with snap why use it? There is no requirement to use snap, usually you can get .deb from somewhere, you can find ppa, or install from source.

Honestly, don't know what distro some of these people are using. Maybe the last time they tried snaps they were slow but they have the same startup speed as anything else now.

the o. s. isn’t a hammer. it’s a service

i’m sure you can find an o. s. that lets you do whatever you want. but will it be updated regularly with security fixes? will it support the latest connectivity technology like 5g? will it have built in support for the latest compression formats to take high res pics and videos? will it work anywhere in the world?

if it does sure. go use it. i don’t think this exists and i’m happy to pay apple for a new phone that does this and upgrade every 5 years

If you believe Apple's marketing that iPhones are unhackable, I have a bridge to sell you.
conjuredbytes · 3 years ago
No need to be aggro about it. No one’s suggesting iPhones are unhackable, just that realistically utilizing an iOS or Android exploit like that is a bit much for something simple like credit card fraud. Those exploits are valuable.

I think there's a lot of unnecessary aggro in here just for the fact that it's from W3Schools. Yeah, MDN is a better source of record but W3schools often lays things out in a way that's easier for beginners to digest. I started with W3Schools before moving to MDN. It served a purpose.

I’m really glad I migrated off Namecheap. Was a long time customer but when they had that massive dnssec outage and their support had no idea what it was doing, that was the last straw for me. I moved everything over to google (I know I know) and haven’t had a single second of downtime. Would love ideas for better alternatives, preferably privacy oriented.

I’ve been using gandi.net for years. They seem to care about playing by the rules and supporting privacy if their supported projects is anything to go by: https://www.gandi.net/en-US/gandi-supports

"You can take some control over your own identity in the current email-based online ecosystem by renting a domain name"

Originally, the idea was that you owned a domain name. Gradually, domain registrars have moved this to the concept that you're just renting it from them. Although you can still transfer domains to another registrar.

I'd like to find a domain registrar whose contractual terms stated that you own your domain name, and they are contractually prohibited from cancelling it or revoking it without a court order. Basically, a contract that forbids what lawyers call "self-help".

conjuredbytes · 3 years ago
For ICANN accredited registrars, aren't there rules about when and how a registrar can delete or revoke a domain? You can submit complaints to ICANN here: https://www.icann.org/compliance/complaint

I actually wrote a blog post about this awhile back at hhttps://dev.to/conjuredbytes/domain-and-registrar-security-c.... Hopefully, someone finds it helpful.
