coldtrait commented on Tell HN: I'm 60 years old. Claude Code has re-ignited a passion    · Posted by u/shannoncc

I am 37;

Claude Code and it's parallels have extinguished multiple ones.

I was able to steer clear of the Bitcoin/NFT/Passport bros but it turns out they infiltrated the profession and their starry puppy delusional eyes are trying to tell me that iteration X of product Y released yesterday evening is "going to change everything".

They have started redefining what "I have build this" actually means, and they have outjerked the executives by slinging outrageous value creation narratives.

> I’m chasing the midnight hour and not getting any sleep.

You are 60; go spend some time with your grand-kids, smell a flower, touch grass forget chasing anything at this age cause a Tuesday like the others things are gonna wrap up.

Absolutely sincerely.

If I was 60 and still had to do any work like this I'd consider myself a failure.

For tone, I prefer efficient — higher signal-to-noise.

In custom instructions I’ll sometimes write something like “tell it like it is.” Interestingly, some models then start with “okay, I’ll tell you like it is…” which makes me wonder whether that’s psychological framing, operational behavior, or both.

Curious why you asked — have you found customization meaningfully changes performance?

Got it.

Since I primarily used ChatGPT, I picked up a bunch of prompts from people sharing it in order to optimize for better results. I don't know if this is relevant anymore as I think they've fixed quite a bit and now you can customize tone and warmth directly.

My prompts were more on avoiding filler, be more direct etc, no emojis etc.

> They made him do it again and he passed

I'd assume that if he got a call from Patrick himself and a second opportunity to get interviewed, that's already a cue for interviewers to pass him regardless of what he says?

coldtrait · 13 days ago
That was what I felt too. Why even need an interview for an acquihire when you have a direct link with the founder/CEO?

Boris from the Claude Code team here.

Some of the engineers working on the app worked on Electron back in the day, so preferred building non-natively. It’s also a nice way to share code so we’re guaranteed that features across web and desktop have the same look and feel. Finally, Claude is great at it.

That said, engineering is all about tradeoffs and this may change in the future!

Couldn't you ask Claude Code to vibe-code a Swift app?

DeepSeek (reasoning) and Gemini (multimodal) have been useful for me — especially when I want stronger pushback or a different angle. What are you hoping to get that you’re not getting from the usual set?
coldtrait · 14 days ago
Do you customize or personalize these at all? Or use it just out of the box? I use gemini for image generation and as an, assistant through my android although not frequently. As a chat assistant the online Google UI is a turnoff personally.

Hell, you're trying to make Instagram be what Instagram used to be. Back in the early (pre-Meta) days, it was just a reverse-chronological feed of the posts from people you followed.

A decent part of why I bailed on Instagram back in 2019 or so was because it had stopped being this for a while (posts reordered, some not even shown, so many ads).

coldtrait · 14 days ago
In my case, Instagram eventually got to a point where most of my friends and family stopped posting. And I started following more creators because their content was interesting. These days there are some a few people I follow who are friends and I mostly just send them dumb reels. I see it more as a platform to consume content than keeping up with updates.

That said, I go through cycles of removing the app and reinstalling it later because it gets addictive.

It's incredible how many applications abuse disk access.

In a similar fashion, Apple Podcasts app decided to download 120GB of podcasts for random reason and never deleted them. It even showed up as "System Data" and made me look for external drive solutions.

coldtrait · 15 days ago
This seems to be a recent popular tool to handle this - https://github.com/tw93/Mole

I also prompt warp/gemini cli to identify unnecessary cache and similar data and delete them
