chickenimprint commented on Firefox will have an option to disable all AI features   mastodon.social/@firefoxw... · Posted by u/twapi

Fully disagree. I use zero so-called "AI" features in my day to day life. None. Not one. Why do I need them in my browser, and why does my browser need to focus on something that, several years into the hype wave, I still *do not use at all*? And it's not for a lack of trying, the results are just not what I need or want, and traditional browsing (and search engines, etc.) does do what I want.

I'd be elated if Firefox solely focused on "the pre-AI era", as you put it, and many other power users would, too. And I somehow doubt my non-techie family cares - if anything, they're tired of seeing the stupid sparkle icons crammed down their throats at every single corner of the world now.

Just my 2 cents: I run a tuxedo laptop, that is just a branded clevo device. It isn't as greatly build as a Mac, because nothing is. But my tuxedo works well, nothing broke, or needed any repair. Can recommend. Branded clevo pcs in Germany are used by Schenker, Nexoc, Wortmann, One Computer, MIFCON and more. Internationally, brands like System76, BTO and XNB are using clevo. I've never heard of BTO and XNB, so this might be false information. But I've heard good things from System76.

Linux compatibility isn't what it used to be.

AMD and Intel support Linux as a first class platform, and everything CPU and GPU from them will work perfectly. Nvidia is on track to match them, albeit on proprietary drivers, if you use the most recent hardware, kernel and drivers. Qualcomm is still basically unusable and so is Apple.

The vast majority of popular and modern wireless chipsets have at least basic drivers in tree. Webcams, touchscreens and pens mostly work. Fingerprint sensors mostly don't work.

System76 has its place. You'll avoid hassle and you'll get the full feature set. You won't have to deal with bizarre edge cases around sleep, multi-gpu, or power saving features.

But truth be told, if you buy a new x86 laptop from any major brand, chances are that everything essential will work instantly or with a bit of tinkering under Linux.

I bought a Lenovo laptop a couple of years ago and returned it immediately because it was bizarrely loud and stopped recognizing half of its ram capacity. I got an equivalent HP for a little more, and I've had much less complaints.

When Apple attempted to anticipate these laws and propose a system which tried to navigate a compromise, the “pro-privacy” faction was so politically dumb they spread FUD about it and actively made sure no reasonable compromise could ever be reached. Now the public with reap what these advocates have sowed, good and hard.

With regards to the FBI incident, Apple said at the beginning of their statement, “This moment calls for public discussion, and we want our customers and people around the country to understand what is at stake.”

The EU is proposing a law. People assure me their laws are democratic and reflect the will of the people. Who is Apple to reject the outcome of public discussion?

The FBI letter was written in a context where an agency was acting without the support of the public. That’s why the framing was all about misuse of the All Writs Act and lack of Congressional blessing for the requested power.

ChatControl is exactly what Apple did. It's client-side, so no one is able to see your messages. The police sees if content hashes match known CSAM.

chickenimprint commented on UK betting giant's unlawful marketing kept suicidal gambler hooked   theguardian.com/society/2... · Posted by u/Tarsul

I'm in the UK and have been applying for dev jobs over the last six months. I've had at least five approaches from recruiters representing gambling companies. They seem to have a lot of money to spend on salaries, and promise experience of languages like Go, and also ML, data science, etc.

I always give them the same answer: no. I don't work for parasites.

I remember the time before the Blair government unwisely deregulated gambling, and I hope we can one day return to that.

A just, healthy society would target and remove those who enrich themselves at the expense of others. The continued existence of society rests upon cooperation beating defection. The exponential rise of legal gambling in the western world is a massive blow to public trust in institutions who were supposed to act in the interest of the people, and a sign of rampant corruption and societal decay.

I also have a Kobo, and I use Plato, created by the same person that made bspwm! It's great, and IMO a little easier to use than KOReader.
chickenimprint · a year ago
I do really like Plato for its superior performance and design, but it's lacking in features and documentation at this stage. KOReader feels like a flimsy hack written in lua, mainly because it is, but it does support SSH, two columns, grid view, more flexible gestures and extensions.

Yeah. Still way more effort than Kobo: plug it in, drag and drop.
chickenimprint · a year ago
I've switched to exclusively using SSH on my Kobo, because I find it less effortful. The connection procedure consists of enabling wifi on the Kobo and clicking on the sftp bookmark in my file browser.

I've only used Powershell a little bit on Linux and Mac but it seems reasonably cross-platform.

On the surface, it looks like I'd be giving up the decently sized ecosystem of Powershell libraries for a new ecosystem without much support?

I'm interested in knowing what Nushell does differently since I'm wanting to find a better shell.

chickenimprint · 2 years ago
I'm probably not the best person to ask, since the last time I touched Powershell, it was Windows only, but I'd say nushell is likely a lot more platform-agnostic, has sane syntax and follows a functional paradigm. Plugins are written in Rust. It's probably not worth it if all you do is Windows sysadmin work, as you'd have to serialize and deserialize data when interacting with Powershell from nu.
