> Basically it looks like a tool that can code for you if you are capable of writing the code yourself (given enough time).

Yes, exactly. I use it the way I used to outsource tasks to junior developers. I describe what I need done and then I do code review.

I know roughly where I want to go and how to get there, like having a sink full of dirty dishes and visualizing an empty sink with all the dishes cleaned and put away, and I just instruct it to do the tedious bits.

But I try and watch how other people use it, and have a few other different styles that I employ sometimes as well.

This just raised a big red flag for me:

> I use it the way I used to outsource tasks to junior developers.

Is this not concerning to you, in a broader sense? These interactions were incredibly formative for junior devs (they were for me years ago) - its how to grew new senior devs. If we automate away the opportunity to train new senior devs, what happens to the future?

Meh, I get people hate Jira, but every time I ask people "What would you rather do instead" there's absolutely no agreement on what's a better solution.

I think it's imoprtant to recognize that if a whole crowd of people say "We hate X" but everybody in that crowd hates eachothers proposals even more, it just creates a facade of agreement where there is none.

cacois · a year ago
But it indicates that something is really wrong, right? And that we should all keep noticing that and keep working on a solution?

I think the negative responses are directed at the use of "meh" and the seeming indifference to an actual problem that could really use a solution, even if we don't have a perfect one everybody agrees on yet.

It goes deeper than that! According to wikipedia, the tentacles, or appendages, are indeed called "arms", but they evolved from what in other molluscs is called a "foot"!

my main reason to use CLI instead of SDK is to support Podman and second reason is to make the project simple and easy to contribute :)
cacois · a year ago
very good call on podman support - it didn't immediately occur to me but that's an obvious reason for this choice.

I’ve never played WoW, because I’ve always felt that it would require impossible time commitment from me.

Looking at the game when others play it makes me think that I would be so happy if I could experience it with a group of friends.

Maybe if I retire and by some miracle know enough people, we can get together and form an awesome guild, and explore the world for the first time?

cacois · 2 years ago
That's a lovely vision. If by the same miracle I retire around the same time, I'm in - haven't played since college, so I'm sure its hardly the same game I knew.

Wrong. Really easy to find lots of examples, here’s a couple to get you started.

https://www.carpro.com/blog/weekly-recalls-lincoln-park-outs...

> The risk of fire exists even when the vehicle is parked and turned off. This month, the company will notify affected owners of the fire risk, advising them to park outside until they can have their vehicles fixed.

https://eu.delawareonline.com/story/news/local/2024/02/19/nh...

> Water may enter the starter solenoid and cause an electrical short which can result in an engine fire while the car is parked or driving, according to the NHTSA.

cacois · 2 years ago
Wow. Well, I'll take the correction. I've never heard of anything like that. However, while this is also scary, I still think its unfair to say the evidence of a potential problem type in a new technology like EVs is not concerning, and to say that the likelihood of fire is greater in ICE (because I don't think its fair to add in the comparison of fire risk while turned on to that of fire risk when turned off)

I feel like interacting with a moderate-sized set of real peers is workable - like chat rooms on AIM with the kids you know from school. Kids have always had unsupervised time with their peers.

Where it breaks down, is when you get a whole ecosystem populated entirely by kids and those trying to make money off of them.

cacois · 2 years ago
I agree that AIM was fine. Not as good as in-person interaction, and no real substitute for it, but as an augmentation it caused no real harm. Chatrooms could be in the same boat, but had more problems.

However, social media ever since feeds and the "like" button are an entirely different beast which is addicting, dehumanizing, and antisocial - preventing kids from developing socially.

So afaik, Hyundai/Kia first recalled around 90k cars over fire risk due to accessory tow hitch, then ~100k over faulty-start-stop AND THEN ~450k SUVs over fire-risk due to seats... but an EV fire gets all the politicians to "rethink"?

EV/lithium fires are worse, but afair ICE vehicles are much more likely to catch fire. Not sure if eg [1] was caused by ICE or EV but that was another bad garage fire incident afaict from English sources. I really don't understand how this reaction jibes with the statistics, seems panicy to me.

According to the NTSB 3.5k/100k hybrids seem to catch fire (3.5%!!), 1.6k/100k ICE and only 25/100k EVs (0.025%) [2].

No no no, you can't compare the ICE risk. an ICE car sitting in my garage has basically zero chance of catching fire and burning my house down while my family sleeps.

What this incident shows is that with an EV, charging in the garage as its supposed to do overnight, that chance is >0.

That is an enormously BIG DEAL, and will matter to a huge number of consumers and lawmakers alike.

> My family gets to see me do things and it's very important for them to know they can do things and solve problems by themselves

Completely agree! The number of people I know who I think would struggle to know whether to hold the plastic or metal end of a screwdriver is depressing to me. I want my kids to grow up with a basic knowledge of mechanics, mechanisms, repairs/maintenance, and experience the world as things that can mostly be understood (and created) rather than things that are conceived and made by others and merely consumed by "normal people".

It also has saved a fair amount of money over the years, but the mindset is more important to show my family than the dollars.

cacois · 2 years ago
This is so important to me. I find its an enormous value of mine to make sure that my kid knows what can be fixed, even if not how to fix it. So many people don't even know its possible to fix many things, so they don't learn, they don't try (and of course they give professionals a huge amounts of money for things that require 30 mins and a $2 part)
