buzz27 commented on Tech firms failing to 'walk the walk' on ethical AI, report says   aljazeera.com/news/2023/1... · Posted by u/mooreds

'AI Ethicists' is the ultimate grift of all time.

For one, all these are self-appointed and they sort of fell back to AI Ethics, when they couldn't do hardcore (AI/ML). It's like how people who couldn't write software fell back to QA testing (Yes, I know there are exceptional QA testers who are passionate about QA, but those are exceptions).

Unless you understand dynamic complex systems (Math and Physics), who can effectively calculate the NET Benefit of AI over the next several decades, you are as clueless as any other person

Second, none of the AI Ethicists ever talk about the positives of AI (climate change, healthcare, material science, productivity) but always some imagined hurt for 'marginalized community'. Considering how these same people roasted Mr Beast for helping the said marginalized community, I'd take their opinion with the grain of salt.

Third, in the extreme case, there is massive anti-tech, anti-white, anti-bro harborings from these AI Ethicists and want to shut down AI just because.

If you don't believe me just watch the Twitter feed from Timnit, Alex Hanna. They are your typical flag-bearers for AI Ethics

Do you feel the way about other fields of applied ethics? Bioethics for example? Technology ethics? Or even more broadly, ethics generally?

Also, and, of course, one can be a professional ethicist without being "anti-tech, anti-white, anti-bro". Whatever that means.

I think Rails is a victim of its own success: many of the hot new Rails codebases from that time are now 10 year old monoliths. And those monoliths need incredible amounts of tests to compensate for the lack of compile-time type checking, Rails version upgrades are multi-month nightmares, and the object-oriented statefulness of the language means that complex load-bearing code can be extremely tricky to untangle.

There are certainly new compelling projects like Sorbet to add type checking, and the ecosystem itself is very mature, it's just that the average codebase is not going to live up the experience you might have with a brand new one.

can you explain this a bit more? it seems to me that test coverage and typing solve different problems.

I’ve been using zotero since 2010 … it’s amazing to see it’s still developing. Dying to try the ios app but I never received an invite, but when I request one it says it was sent. If anyone would like to sell me one let me know.

I would pay even more to never again see "recommended" tweets from people I don't follow. I use Twitter sort of like RSS, insofar as I want to be able to see everything the people I follow tweet. It amazes me that its not possible to coerce Twitter to do this in the settings. Instead I have to view users individually to see what they've tweeted since I last checked the app.

This is great. Can you point to any other similar sites, where I can download printable high res images of significant or interesting artwork? I found some at the Library of Congress, for example.

I was thinking about this recently watching a major web app throw a bunch of errors and slowdownsall to do with its SPA features. If it was just a normal web app it would be so much faster and more usable. It seems crazy to me that we have faster and faster computers and internet connections, and yet we've added all this new latency to the software we use.

I find the list of pros somewhat unconvincing.

For a lot of applications, a reload is no hardship, and is faster than most SPA interactions I see.

For a lot of granualar actions, jquery, while not sexy, is not harder to maintain than a full SPA would be.

The alleged development efficiency of decoupling front from back really needs context and argument.

As I see things, there are a lot of web projects where a normal app with a little progressive enhancement is a good solution.
