brainfire commented on Flaws in the clinical trials for Gardasil made it harder to assess safety   slate.com/health-and-scie... · Posted by u/ehudla

I wonder if any efforts have been made to conduct a deep review of clinical trials to see if there are patterns of protocol design that are likely to lead to underreporting of adverse effects.

As (unfortunately) a user of a number of prescription medications, I have encountered adverse effects that were considered uncommon, yet heard about similar issues from fellow users. Of course, this is anecdata, so one can draw no conclusions, but I have a nagging suspicion that enough digging by people who truly understand statistics will find flaws, perhaps major ones.

Not likely to happen, though.

Ben Goldacre (of "Bad Science" fame) has been doing work in this area for a while: http://www.badscience.net/

The article seems to never get to the point. What was the disturbing thing?

As far as I can tell the first specific thing that the author calls out as something that should disturb all humans is that the Aladdin characters are joined by a character from a different IP. Truly terrifying to any company or copyright holder.

Funny enough, I had pretty much the same skepticism as the author re: Amazon Key. With IOT "security" scandals floating by seemingly daily, this feels like a poor tradeoff.

_However,_ this product seems like a great opportunity for a small hack: install the whole thing as a locker/bench/cabinet on your front porch. Almost all of the convenience, and no increase in risk. In fact, I'm a touch surprised that this isn't how the product was conceived and launched in the first place: as a personal package locker.

Something very close to that did launch first: Amazon Hub. It's a shared unit for apartment buildings though.

This was flagged to death but I'm vouching it because it should be addressed.

First, I'm not sure I believe your numbers to begin with. Is there a source?

Second, a huge issue is racism in law and police policies (not necessarily in individual cops) - crime statistics need to be taken with a grain of salt. The numbers reflect what the police and courts do, not what people do- they're related of course, but there's a bias.

I think you might be... extrapolating a lot from this.

I’ve heard this argument many times now and I still fail to see how we’re feeling sympathy for these people. Every time this conversation is brought up I see 0 solutions and people that very low-key suggest these people have to die because coal must disappear, because outsourcing to China is good because we’re living in a global economy, because they vote Trump and they don’t share our liberal view of society and they might not like black people or feminists, etc.

Those are some... pretty strange views. Where do you see them expressed?

Society appears to be moving to a post-fact era, where opinions and feelings matter more than evidence and data.

Just like all those stubborn meat eaters ignoring the science that eating meat increases cancer risk.

How incredible it is that a Federal Agency needs a private company to identify its own citizens. You guys really should get smart ID cards like every other sane country. They have a certificate on them and you can even buy a card reader to use the chip and identify yourself in state-ran online services. Come join us in 2017, it's cool here.

Federal employees wouldn't implement a project like that - contractors would. Like Equifax. (Or my employer, for whom I am not speaking.)
