I really feel for the Wachoskis. They couldn't not do a sequel, but they had nowhere to go--The Matrix was already perfect.

They couldn't recapture the key reveal of the Matrix. It would be like doing a sequel to "The Sixth Sense"--tag line: "He's Still Dead". And without that, it's just another action movie except "bullet time" is no longer innovative.

Their solution was to go deeper into the mythology and the larger world, but that was never going to be as fresh as the original.

I would have done a time-jump and have Neo be the mentor figure to a new Neo (a Neo-Neo). They'd still be fighting the Architect (and maybe Smith) and they'd still explore the larger world of Zion + Machine City, but the key reveal would be that Neo himself is just a program (like the Oracle).

But what do I know? I'm just a simple programmer.

I stand by the fact that a skilled editor cutting like hell across movies 2 and 3 to a singular sequel could save that story

Thanks a lot! Yeah, when I had the idea for the circle of fifths keyboard, I knew I just had to build it because it has so many benefits compared to the naive approach, especially when thinking "harmonically".

Yes, there are plans for an iOS version! Godot has native support for iOS, so it should be pretty much plug-and-play. I haven't done it yet because of the developer fee that Apple charges, and because I am mainly an Android user myself. If there is enough interest though, I'm sure my partner would let me borrow her Macbook & iPad in order to bring this out though :)

Purchased one to try for work (perks of being in the IT department), just arrived today. Personally interested in running FreeBSD on it, and wanted to see how possible that is and what doesn't work (see https://xyinn.org/md/freebsd/wifibox for excellent write-up). Officially I need to test Ubuntu Desktop and Windows on it, but here are my initial impressions to date:

- quality is extremely high; I expected something to suffer for the cost, but it strikes me as a nicely manufactured laptop in every respect

- initial configuration, adding in external ports, memory and nvme drive, took all of 10 minutes from laptop opening to closing again ... amazing job they've done

- every bit of the insides of the laptop is labeled, it's clear and clean and there are 2d barcodes you can scan for all components to get instant documentation

- bios is legit, modern, nicely laid out, simple to configure

- from order to delivery took a few weeks, nothing extreme. Came direct from Taiwan

- the keyboard has nice raised keys, and I'm super comfortable typing on it. Only issue for me coming from a Mac, the function and control keys are swapped on the left side, but that's easy to fix up... overall, one of the nicest keyboards I've seen on a laptop

- weight feels like a current Macbook Air, just a little larger dimensions overall

- switches to hard turn off camera and microphone on the top ... nice!

Overall I'm extremely pleased with this laptop, and I'm thinking there is zero reason I'm spending so much money with Dell (our current standard). I was thinking of using Lenovo, but screw that.. if my testing pans out, this is our new standard.

bobbles commented on The IKEA Effect – Why managers fall in love with their own ideas   mannhowie.com/ikea-effect... · Posted by u/elephant_burger

You are missing the point completely.

The IKEA effect is not "self assembly", the IKEA effect is "I think of this piece of furniture more highly because I assembled it myself". The IKEA effect compares how people feel about the same piece of furniture when they've assembled it themselves vs when someone else did it.

bobbles · 3 years ago
I'd be interested to know how the feelings change if theyve owned the piece of furniture for like a year, rather than having just felt the efforts of putting it together, etc. ie. does the value of the build effect drop off a cliff after the efforts of putting it together are no longer relevant to the builder.
bobbles commented on Why does Meta Quest – Horizon Worlds look so terible?    · Posted by u/jay_kyburz

The Oculus/Meta Quest 2 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2. That chip's GPU, the Adreno 650, has a pixel fill rate of 14 GP/s. Compare this to a GPU like the NVidia RTX 3090, which has a fill rate of 190 GP/s.

Lighting, textures, transparency, and many of the effects that make things look good in modern games, at the resolution and framerate required for smooth VR, can't currently be done on a $400 headset.

At least in terms of the cartoonish graphics, it seems to me like a case of "fast, cheap, good, pick two".

> There is a tendency in the West to view all minorities as somehow being the same.

Is there? While my experience comes from living in a cosmopolitan border town, it is hard to imagine anyone seriously lumping Asians in with Africans, short of the outright rascists raging against "immigrants"

bobbles · 4 years ago
But what you will absolutely find is people for example lumping Asian people together, whether theyre from Japan, China, Korea, etc.
bobbles commented on I shaved 187MB off United Airlines' 439MB iOS app   telkins.dev/posts/how-i-s... · Posted by u/trevor-e
coldcode · 4 years ago
I spent the last ten years of my career building iOS apps, all but one you would likely known at the time, and whoever in charge of this app is an idiot. Shipping an app to the general public with symbols intact? Really? If they didn't know/didn't care, it tells me no one there likely cared about any other quality issue either. It's highly likely that any relevant lead person probably screamed about this daily, but higher ups don't give a shit.

At my last job our legal team would have had a cow shipping labels. Our apps are gleaned by blogs looking for scoops on upcoming features.

I once interviewed at a major airline (not United) and at the time they had outsourced their entire app and web to some foreign companies, including any and all oversight. Their app was a POS and they had hired someone to write a new one -- the same company. Now they had no idea why it was so delayed so they wanted to hire someone to embed in the other company to spy on what was going on. Of course I wanted nothing to do with this travesty. This was years ago, no idea what happened.

You'd be amazed at how pathetic mobile development can be even at big companies. Mobile doesn't have to be hard, but if management tries hard enough, can make crap at scale.

bobbles · 4 years ago
It seems like multimillion $ companies everywhere can simultaneously declare widely that mobile is their future, point to stats like 75%+ usage of their services is through the app interface, and then basically their entire dev/maintenance crew is one person stretched across multiple projects already.

I really hope Apple does a refresh of the current ipod touch before they kill the line. Yeah theres all the stuff about screentime and kids etc. but sometimes we are stuck in a horrible waiting room like a hospital ER and you jsut want them to be able to occupy themselves without it having to be an educational experience of some kind (just like the rest of us).

Can even use it for facetime and so only contacts in the devices are grandparents and us.

The iPod touch is so good for that, but worried theyre going to kill it off...

Backblaze has been a godsend for me - I've been paying for years and only used it 2 or 3 times but both were recovery of files I NEEDED and was so so happy to have stored in BB. The ability to pull an individual file as needed has been amazing.
