This always felt like something which the LCARS interface addressed, at least conceptually (though I've never seen an implementation which was more than just a skin).

I'd love to see folks finding the same sort of energy and innovation which was driving early projects such as Momenta and PenPoint and so forth.

Yes, there’s a video where Michael Okuda (with Adam Savage, I think?) recalls the TNG cast being worried about where to tap, and his response was essentially “you can’t press a wrong button“.

Welp, I now have a new Bluesky account just for generating satirical misinformation. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hah, yes. Satire can be "deceptively" effective. I didn't create this, and naturally it was flagged for a time, but if it made someone chuckle it was worth posting on a Saturday night.

Siri is great at setting reminders (I see it's my friends birthday tomorrow or next week and want to remember to call them, I immediately say "Hey Siri, remind me on Tuesday at 1pm to text ____ happy birthday'), good when I start a load of laundry in my apartment building's communal basement laundry room, "Hey Siri, set a timer for 46 minutes", good at "Hey Siri, turn the lights off everywhere" to get the lights off using Homekit (now called Home?) when I'm in bed. Siri is great at "Hey Siri next song" when I'm listening to my Spotify discover weekly and don't like what it's playing and that is way easier than pulling my phone out and tapping a button.

I would argue Humans are bad at Siri, more than Siri is bad at ____.

You can set it so you don’t need the “hey” anymore. Tough habit to break though…

I can't speak for all republicans, because we are a diverse group. But if you care to understand why I am not bending backwards at every turn to try and fix global warming, it's very simple. I believe God created this world for His children, and that He will return to it in due time. That's it. I understand that may appear as though I don't care, but that's not true. I certainly don't go out of my way to pollute the earth. I always leave a campsite cleaner than when I found it, etc... this rhetoric that Republicans only care about number one couldn't be further from the truth though.

At some point we have to judge based on actions, not beliefs.

Personally I was disappointed to find this generation of consoles still asking us to choose between performance and visuals. It felt like a necessary compromise last generation because those consoles were seriously underpowered; I'd hoped this time around we'd be back to just plug-and-play. It's easy to forget that prior to the PS3 and 360 generation, 60fps was very common.

I know I'm in the minority and a lot of people prefer the choice, but when a game is offering three or four different fidelity/performance modes (not uncommon now raytracing is a factor), I get decision paralysis and worry about whether I'm getting the optimal experience. I'd like a "developer recommended" option that they feel best matches their creative vision.

The fidelity vs. performance decision is precisely what Sony markets the PS5 Pro as eliminating. I’d also just prefer developers make 60fps the baseline, then use any additional horsepower for more frames or more real resolution.

I hate to say it but their minimum configs feel like a pricing scam. Like the price of a hotel room before taxes & fees. Even store employees will tell you that you really have to go one level up.
bhj · a year ago
And each level up in RAM typically includes a bump to CPU and/or GPU core counts as well, so it is even more difficult to discern the true pricing. Annoying, but also understandable that they don't want to produce every possible combination of specs.

Don't get me started on needing to buy a 1TB+ iPad Pro to get double the RAM, though.

In the US it is because District Attorneys have an explicit, open policy of not prosecuting petty crime. That has led to police not investigating or arresting, because there is no point.

The linked article says:

> He [Epperson] is currently conducting a multisite study in Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Louis that examines the development and implementation of deferred prosecution programs, a prosecutor-led innovation to divert people with nonviolent charges from traditional criminal justice processing.

Seems reasonable to me, and a far cry from "an explicit, open policy of not prosecuting petty crime" that is somehow country-wide.

I'm really surprised "with Apple Intelligence" is showing up so soon before "ai" has been proven as even remotely useful.
bhj · a year ago
"Apple Intelligence" was named precisely to be a marketing differentiator from any supposed "non-useful AI". It's also a hedge, in a sense.
