What if Apple just operated a MVNO like Google Fi does?
badrequest · 3 months ago
MVNOs are like second or third-tier citizens on mobile carriers, why would Apple hand a lever like that to, say, AT&T?

[edit - Gabe responded]. See this Cloud Run spending cap recommendation [0] to disable billing, which potentially irreversibly deletes resources but does cap spend!

Sure, but why post a tutorial of how to spin this up in GCP instead of...productizing it in GCP?

Another creator gone off the deep end apparently?

> reading the review responses by the creator, I don't really trust it anymore. Being rude to others who are concerned over the recent move to closed-source (and without warning!) is pretty disheartening.

> So, uh, the guy who made the VS Code Material Theme is threatening everyone who uses it in their products. He seems to have forgotten it was originally licensed under the Apache License, 2.0.. He wiped the commit history to make it look like it was always his weird fake license.

Real messy. It’s always shocking to me how little people realize - or care - how their behavior - especially their treatment of others reflects on them.

It seems utterly absurd to me that anybody should be able to issue a copyright claim on a collection of colors and fonts. Copyrights are issued to logos and slogans, not design systems.

I worked on Wire right at the beginning, happy to answer any questions about it.

No questions, but a heartfelt thank you. I've used wire for years and plan to continue doing so. :)

They would have to be rather specific and specialized reasons, and they did not specify anything of the kind, just “Go and Python”.

They don't "have" to be any of those things. People are not consistently rational actors, as evidenced by your continued advocacy for Emacs.

> If Trump follows through on his promises, the US will be in bad shape.

Might be a good learning experience for the Red states.

One huge issue in the US politics is that the Red states are largely insulated from the consequences of their decisions by the Federal budget transfers. Nearly all deep Red states are net receivers of the Federal funds, especially when Medicare/SS are taken into account.

All that culture war nonsense, CHIPS act, and so on do not make any tangible difference for a voter in Alabama. All these amount to peanuts compared with the overall Federal spending.

Trump is poised to seriously change this.

Bold of you to think the red states are capable of learning.

Positives:

+ form factor

+ ARM/Apple silicon/SoC

Negatives:

- Apple tax on memory, storage

- non-upgradeable

- Apple tax on 1GbE to 10 GbE ($100 surcharge lol)

- maxes out at 64G of configurable memory w/ m4 pro

Got to give it to Apple. The traunches between different configuration levels is “small” enough to convince buyers to enter the next level.

It’s like “hey, you are already at $4000 for m4 pro with 64g. Just spend an extra $400-$600 for that bump in storage. It’s no biggy. We losing money at this point”.

I wonder how many consumers fall into this sunk cost fallacy scenario that Apple has designed.

badrequest · 10 months ago
I would genuinely be buying one today if the memory upgrades were half as much and I could go to 128GB or even 96.

Does merely hosting a website on WP Engine constitute an affiliation? I wouldn’t consider myself affiliated with Apple, Microsoft, or Volkswagen, just because I use their products and services.
badrequest · 10 months ago
The author (and myself, coincidentally) used to work at WP Engine. I still have friends there, I could still describe their infrastructure if I had to. How am I not to interpret myself as "affiliated?"

This is a ludicrous paranoid screed that, thanks to the nature of Mastodon, will not be on the live internet in a decade's time.
