avocado4 commented on TikTok told moderators to suppress posts by “ugly” people and the poor   theintercept.com/2020/03/... · Posted by u/Gonzih

Geez, I thought this might be an overblown piece about algorithms unwittingly optimizing for the wrong things, but the headline is pretty accurate. Discussing how moderators choose content to recommend to people in the “For You” section (not a user — I assume this is something highlighted to users):

> Under this policy, TikTok moderators were explicitly told to suppress uploads from users with flaws both congenital and inevitable. “Abnormal body shape,” “ugly facial looks,” dwarfism, and “obvious beer belly,” “too many wrinkles,” “eye disorders,” and many other “low quality” traits are all enough to keep uploads out of the algorithmic fire hose.

A TikTok spokesperson seems to confirm they are real guidelines, but won’t confirm how they were used.

> TikTok spokesperson Josh Gartner told The Intercept that “most of” the livestream guidelines reviewed by The Intercept “are either no longer in use, or in some cases appear to never have been in place,” but would not provide specifics.

China exporting its culture to the world.

This is the same thing China is doing, except China is also lying about it and saying they have "contained" it with extreme quarantine, in part to trick other nations into doing the same thing to tank their economies while China is going back to work and letting the virus spread.

Good for UK to step up amidst hysteria. Hopefully other democratic nations will follow suit.

Even for people under 40, it’s 20 times deadlier than the flu is.

Do you have a source for that?

tldr:

This article leaves off about where a similar report on epidemiological models did a couple of weeks ago: Covid-19 will be very very hard to control if persons showing no symptoms spread the disease too often, but we do not know whether or not they do.

This article does explicitly discuss pre-symptomatic transmission, specifically it being worse than SARS but better than flu in that regard.

Power move or not, these are things the US desperately needs. Just accept the damn supplies, thank them, and try to do better next time.

There's no shortage of test kits, there's a shortage of PCR lab capacity to process those samples.

Masks and ventilators would be a good thing to donate though.

If you're young (18-40) then you should consider offering to pick up supplies for your elderly (or at risk) friends/family/neighbours so that they can more effectively self-isolate.

If you're old, self-isolation is the best thing.

Better yet, teach elders how to buy groceries online.
